full time mums cant cope with their children?

Now I know this is a tricky one but after a uni reunion where we were all discussing our situations it became very apparent that tyhose who are working full time really find it hard to cope with more than one child. I dont mean the organisation etc we all find that hard i mean they dont seem to be able to look after more than one chiold without another adult there and even on days off weekends etc rely on grandparents etc. Is it just that if you work full time you dont go through the coping zone and never learn to do it?

Is this going to be a WOHM/SAHM thread - or a "how universities are already failing to produce competent graduates"?

OP: if that was really true, then my commiserations to you for being part of such an appalling cohort.

AMumInScotland · 02/08/2011 13:36

You must know some very strange people.....

fivegomadindorset · 02/08/2011 13:37

Well I work and this week I have so far managed to not lose either of my children at a festival when I adventured round it leaving my husband drinking entertaining freinds.

Managed to take my two to the beach without either of them drowining.

Managed to take them to their swimming lesson and tea after without being chicked out of the cafe.

Managed most Satiurdays last winter to look after them while DH went shooting, no I tell a lie I did take them to see my parents.

Anifrangapani · 02/08/2011 13:39

That leaves a Sophie's choice then - boy, girl, boy, girl.... sorry can't choose which one to farm off to another unsuspecting adult while I enjoy the sole company of one while on holiday. Prehaps I should sharpen up my organisational skills while I am at it and get a timetable together. Biscuit

QuintessentialShadow · 02/08/2011 13:39

They were just engaging in some competitive moaning. Dont worry. Dont believe it. Says a lot about the kind of people who have time for a Reunion, though.... losers Wink

vigglewiggle · 02/08/2011 13:42

News flash - parenting is hard work! The more children you have, the harder it gets.

We all need a rest every now and then. I'm a SAHM and I like a bit of help here and there. I'm sure working parents are no different.

So of your group of friends, did all the SAHP's look after children alone at the weekends? Confused

JemimaMuddledUp · 02/08/2011 13:45

I work - with a class full of children. Spending the weekends/holidays with just my own three is a breeze in comparison.

I take it non of your old uni friends went on to be teachers? Grin

CaptainNancy · 02/08/2011 13:46

Of course- FTWOHM have never looked after their own children by themselves... they didn't take maternity leave, are never home on the weekends, never take holiday from paid work. Hmm

sittinginthesun · 02/08/2011 13:47

Ooh, I know two mums just like that - in fact, when I think about it, the only two full time working mums I know who have more than one child.

Funny, when I read the OP, I thought, what complete rubbish, but it does apply in my very limited sample size.

CMOTdibbler · 02/08/2011 13:48

Uh huh. I work ft, and I cope fine thank you. As does dh. With no family help at all

pawsnclaws · 02/08/2011 13:48

Same as vigglewiggle, I don't work but I've got ds1 and ds3 at home at the moment while ds2 has a wonderful week at his grandparents. It means I can do things with two that are more tricky with three (such as swimming), and ds2 is getting thoroughly spoiled helping granny deplete the biscuit tin.

DH works full time but funny enough is just as capable/incapable with the children as I am - why is it always mums that seem to be the focus?

foxinsocks · 02/08/2011 13:50

it's true, I really struggle. I can barely remember their names let alone their ages

Purpleprickles · 02/08/2011 13:50

It must be because those of us who work full time are utterly shit human beings.

Honestly what is the point of this discussion Hmm

annbenoli · 02/08/2011 13:50

sorry i did mean full time working mothers - they seem not to have learnt to multi task in comparison to the part time workers who seem to be able to do it all

OP posts:
redlac6 · 02/08/2011 13:51

hahahahahahaha full time working mums CAN"T multi-task??? Seriously???

hatwoman · 02/08/2011 13:52

I was just going to come on say that I certainly couldn't cope with my children if I was a "full time mum". They drive me round the bend as it is and I get to escape to work every now and then. Lawks knows what would happen if I didn't. but maybe that's just me. and my kids. and it's based on a misinterpretation of the thread title. and it was being facetious anyway. so really not very relevant at all. at all. at all.

HandDivedScallopsrgreat · 02/08/2011 13:53

Amazing how full time working fathers manage to cope with their children isn't it Hmm?

foxinsocks · 02/08/2011 13:53

aah hat how lovely to see you

how is it oop north?

foxinsocks · 02/08/2011 13:55

it's because they are men Scallops and genetically destined to be able to cope with full time work and parenting without so much as a sideways swipe at their own gender

now women on the other hand....if some women spent as much time working as they did bitching about other women, I suspect we would have taken over the world a long time ago

Purpleprickles · 02/08/2011 13:56

Annbenoli are you in cahoots with the builders who are using a pneumatic drill outside my front door? Clearly you are both trying to send me over the edge.

Oh and I work full-time as a nursery teacher. I work with 50 children each day. Funnily enough I'm quite good at multitasking. But that could be because us full time working mums have two heads and four arms Hmm

fluffyanimal · 02/08/2011 13:58

Hmm I work full-time, I have 2 DC, my DH regularly goes away for his work. I'm the best damn multi-tasker there is.

It is hard sometimes but mainly because DS2 is just 2 and when out of the home needs constant monitoring and invariably wants to do something very different from DS1, so giving both of them my attention when on my own is a challenge.

Lots of my childless/single-child working families do say "I don't know how you do it" - but I don't know any different. How do LPs manage, after all? You just do.
