My 3 year old just won't do it!

I have a three year old little boy and I have been trying to potty train him for what feels like weeks. He has only on two occasions manage to do a wee on the potty and I think that was more luck than judgement.

I am really beginning to get frustrated by it - he knows he wants to go as he is hiding. He will even stand next to the potty and have an accident - I am constantly asking him whether he wants to go and put him on the potty to which he will say no then five mins later have an accident.

Can you give me some tips please as I am beginning to lose my temper with him but dont want to make it an 'issue'.

Here are a few things you could try.

Don't keep asking him if he needs to have a wee. If he does it all over the floor tell him if next time he could use the potty.

Try a reward system. I know that pull ups have a training pack and that has stickers etc in it.

Give him lots of juice so he needs to wee more and he'll get used to the feeling of needing to go.

Or you could put him back in nappies and try again in a few months.

The main thing is don't worry he'll do it when he's ready.

have you tried using the toilet? It sounds a bit like he doesn't like the potty.

Have you tried bribery? Mine always got a little chocolate treat if they did something on the potty. After a couple of days of success it became 'you can have a treat after tea' so you don't have to do it for too long. Just to get them going in the first place and then they just get used to it. If you don't want to do the sweets/chocolate thing, do shiny stickers. I'm using stickers atm for behaviour in general with my 3 yr old and 4.5 yr old and it's amazing how bribery with stickers works!

Chocolate treats worked with my two and they've cracked it in a matter of days.

Good luck!

sevans,i went through this with my ds a few months ago.My solution was to give up and try again a month later in a much calmer manner.

It is soul destroying,i feel for you,but you will get through this and he will become trained.

I became quite tense about the whole thing so my dh took the lead when he had aweek off as he's much calmer than me.He took a few days of little accidents now and then ,then he cracked it.He still won't sit in the big seat without being held as he's terrified of falling in.

Staying really calm is the answer, and not asking him if he needs to go all the time helps aswell.

Good Luck
