Language refusal in trilingual 3y 8mo boy.

I was so smug about DD's languages and obviously created some bad karma that is emerging in DS's "language refusal".

Our situation is that we have OPOL at home and the DCs are schooled in a 3rd language. DD is completely trilingual and has been from very early on but DS is another story. Basically he is using only his mother tongue and refusing to speak the father tongue and the school language. So my question is, how to deal with this? So far we have ignored it and carried on OPOL and have tried not to force the issue since, given DS's rather perverse nature, we fear this would be counterproductive. Is "language refusal" common? How long does it last? Are there any recognised strategies for dealing with it?

TIA.
