how do you entertain a 3.6yo on a 5 hour car journey?

dp and ds1 need to take a 5 hour car journey together. there will be breaks, but ds1 will be in the back seat, no one else in the car (apart from dp obviously) and we are worried about him getting bored/distracting dp. I am proposing to get him a leapster explorer which would be just for occasional long journeys, dp is opposed.

how would you keep a 3.6yo boy entertained for such a long time? he normally needs a few hours of running/jumping/active time every day to stay pleasant.

loving the idea of homemade I spy! also the notion that boredom is a life skill, so true :)

am feeling more positive about the journey thanks (not that it's me who has to do it), but think we can plan some good entertainment which will lead nicely to sleep.

any other CD ideas are welcome too

TBH when our son was rising 4, we decided it was time he properly heard "our" music

We're doing a 6 hour journey on Thursday (to Camp Bestival I am so excited I'm giddy!!!) and have bought various sticker/activity books, we'll also give the boys (5.4 and 3.8) their pillows so they can get comfy when tired. ds2's not too bad but now ds1's in the seat with a normal seat belt fastening he says his head isn't comfy he can be a touch dramatic

I've been to the library today and taken out 4 audio books, one's called 'Dirty Bertie Pants and Burp' which the boys think is hilarious. They can't wait to listen but I'm making them wait until we start the journey.
