Any YouTube child friendly setting?

Jesusgirl · 17/07/2011 10:56

My 31month old has managed to figure out how to use the iPad and frequently goes on YouTube to watch peppa pig. Sometimes she clicks on some modified P.pig videos eg- peppa pig eats little brother, peppa pig killed.
We now try to keep the iPad away from her but then she has lots of educational games on it.
So I was wondering if there was any parental control setting or anything like that on you tube. Just something to block out any inappropriate videos.
Thanks.

Or does anyone know how I can take off YouTube from the iPad and iPhone. I wouldn't want her to stop using the iPad altogether just for her not to go on YouTube.

Im also trying to figure out how to set parental controls on my iPhone - cant see any options to do so. Dd loves watching songs and kiddie stuff on YouTube so some settings are necessary I think

BertieBotts · 15/01/2012 09:11

There aren't any, the best way to do it is to use an external site/program, like kideo or totlol. I think some of them you have to pay for.

Youtube's own controls seem a bit rubbish, really. It seems everything is flagged as okay for all ages until it's picked up on which means stuff falls through the net a lot. Whereas the other sites, videos have to be certified as okay for children before they are allowed on.

Just take the you tube app off, it's the only way... We had a similar incident involving the tellytubbies.
Hold down on the you tube app until it wobbles and a cross above it appears, click on the cross and it's gone!

You will still be able to access it through safari though.

RustyBear · 15/01/2012 09:17

You can remove YouTube altogether by going to Settings-General -Restrictions. Tap Enable Restrictions and you will be asked for a password. You can then disallow YouTube and various other options, including in-app purchases, which is also a good idea if you allow young children to use an iPad or iPhone.

You can also set a ratings level for videos, but I'm not sure if YouTube videos are rated in this way.

CrystalTits · 15/01/2012 09:31

You can also install a child-friendly browser such as Safe Browser by Mobicip (download from the App Store), then use Restrictions to disable Safari. I've done this for my DS's iPod Touch and so far it's working well!

RustyBear · 15/01/2012 09:35

The advantage of disallowing YouTube instead of removing it is that you can still watch yourself by putting in the password.

Brussells · 16/01/2012 11:36

Youtube has a safe search facility built in, which you can lock in place with your account. It can only then be unlocked by that specific account which locked it, for that browser. You'll have to watch out for different browsers being installed, or used however.

You can find the safe search option right at the very bottom of the front page of Youtube.

BertieBotts · 17/01/2012 15:46

The safe search doesn't filter out thinks like the spoof cartoon voiceovers, though, so it's fairly pointless.

Brussells · 17/01/2012 16:53

Nothing but parental supervision is going to 'filter' out that kind of content.

Perhaps you could get a pile of books for your 2.5 yr old.

Download kids YouTube

Mehfruittea · 24/04/2017 20:18

We use kids YouTube which is brilliant and filtered for young ones. The search facility is great because it is voice controlled.

The standard YouTube app has recently introduced an offline feature. You can download a trusted playlist and set the offline only setting. Then your little one can only view the downloaded content. Great because it works on the iPad in the car without wifi!!

Off topic: surprised/impressed you know how many months at this age! I couldn't count past 12!!

Just came across my 9-year-old boy watching one of those annoying video game with someone commentating - a barrage of inane whoops. His name is RedHatter and his blurb says he makes 'daily kid-friendly' videos. They all contain constant violence - unprovoked attacks with baseball bats by animated cute animals. I've reported one of them but it seems like a full time job to stay on top of this horrible stuff.

Kimber2 · 15/07/2017 23:33

Another option is to tap on ‘Add a Website’ under ‘Never Allow’. The trick here is to enter both the normal YouTube URL (http://www.youtube.com) and the mobile site URL (m.youtube.com), as most times your iPad or iPhone will access the mobile site.

Youareabadparent · 18/07/2017 16:55

There's been a restricted mode on youtube for ages, go into settings and set "restricted mode filtering" to "strict"

Download the YouTube Kids app on your tablet. kids.youtube.com/

OakleyCat · 08/01/2018 17:35

Love this new channel Care and Share toys that encourages appropriate language and good manners for the younger ones!

fortnitehatingmum · 22/05/2019 21:51

You're all aware that youtube wasn't made for kids, and they're not going to change the entire website/app just for kids. There' many apps with only kid friendly videos, like mineflix and whatnot. Just delete the youtube app and get them one of those instead, sincerely, a teenager who's on here as a joke.

fortnitehatingmum · 22/05/2019 21:54

redhatter is not a kids channel, either your son lied to you or you aren't seeing something, FNAF is not a kids game and neither is GTA, sincerely, a teen who is trying too help some of you out.

Dvg · 28/06/2019 07:51

Just download Youtube Kids :)
