sorry to hyjack a thread on AIBU but it has occured to me that my lo's probably aren't helping out as much as they could,
what little jobs do you give your DC's so that they learn responsibility and help out around the house.
my dc's are 4 and start school in sept

TIA Smile

Mine (aged 3.10 and 2.2) have to tidy their toys away after playing.
And hand out spoons to each other at dinner time.

I think the key one is helping to keep their own rooms tidy, so attempting to straighten their beds in a morning, putting dirty clothes in the laundry basket, putting PJs under pillow each morning, and tidying away toys - easier if you have labelled (with pictures) storage for things.

They can also help put with setting table, getting dinner ready and putting their dishes by/in the sink after a meal.

Ds liked helping to sort washing into lights and darks at this age, then put stuff in / take stuff out of the washing machine, help put things up on the line (standing on chair or handing pegs and garments to me), sorting things into the cuttlery drawer.

Laying the table.
Getting cereal out/ away at breakfast.
Putting own PJs and cuddlys back to bed each morning.
Loading/ unloading washing machine.
picking dandelion heads off the lawn- paid 1p a flower, only from OUR lawn when asked.

Lay the table
Take responsibility for putting own coat and shoes away when you come in (if they can reach)
Help hang washing out
Wash veg for dinner (she actually really loves doing this)
Put own dirty clothes in washing basket
Help unstack dishwasher

These are the things that my nearly five year old does.

lechatnoir · 13/07/2011 21:24

My 5.5 year old:
'Makes' his bed, PJs under pillow & puts dirty washing in basket
Gets the milk in & the cereals out for breakfast
Tidies up toys at the end of the day
Helps put the sofa/cushions/chairs etc back if we've been making a camp

He is quite capable of doing all the above without too much fuss but I still have to remind him most days.

having looked at all your lists think mine are actually doing more than i realised!, they get themselves dressed and tidy room in the morning, pick up toys and help set the table at meal times, this evening i got them to clear their plates away and asked them to scrape them over the bin - this ended up in food all over the floor so may have to practice this Grin thanks for all the suggestions, love the dandelion idea think i may steal that!
