Vinegar for cleaning

Wasn't really sure if this was the right place for this but nevermind! I've put it in several cos I'd really like an answer!!

My (French) mil has instilled into me the usefulness of vinegar for household cleaning and descaling kettles etc. Whilst we were living in France we could buy huge bottles of white vinegar really cheap (about 25p a litre), but here I can't find any as cheap. So last time my dad went to france I sent him off to find me some cheap white vinegar. Unfortunately he came back with 4 litres of cheap red wine vinegar. Could this be used in place of the white, or is it gonna taint and stain everything??

oo, can one of you tell me how you use it? i heard about vinegar being useful and a way to cut down on chemicals but didn't know details.... tried cleaning fridge with malt vinegar which isn't a great plan

White vinegar is fantastic to clean lime scale off taps!!!! Soak kitchen towel and wrap around the tap with some clingfilm to keep it on and leave for about two hours or over night. It usually comes off with the towel. It stinks, but it's magic!!

I get it in Costco - £1.50 for 5L.

Only use the white stuff, though.

EXCELLENT as a final rinse in your washing machine w/bedding or towels you wash at 60 degrees w/a few drops of lavender or tea tree oil - I use a tea cup full.

Keeps machine from getting foosty.

Also use it as a shower spray to keep the mould down. Fill a spray bottle w/it, the juice of a lemon and some tea tree oil. Spray shower after use - better than those nasty chemicals.

i use it for cleaning windows, in an empty load in the washer to freshen up the machine and with bicarb of soda to clean out drains (which DD thinks is so cool as it bubbles like crazy).

Can use to descale kettle coffee machine etc. Just boil in kettle, or put through your cafetiere. Also use mixed with water to clean windows and polish to a shine with newspaper. Sounds weird but works! And mix in a bottle with water and lavender or tea tree oil and use to clean surfaces in kitchen and bathroom etc. Cheap and ecologically sound

Bowl of water in microwave with a glug of white vinegar in and heat on high power for about 5 mins then just wipe over with a soft cloth voila a nice clean microwave.

Expat, sprayed my shower today with vinigar, lemon and tea tree mix but room now stinks of vinegar- did I do something wrong or is that just a side effect of being chemical free?

morningpaper · 30/11/2005 21:07

I gave up because the smell of vinegar was vile. Is there a solution?

littlechristmaself · 30/11/2005 21:11

a little bi carb helps with the smell

mummyhill · 30/11/2005 21:11

No sorry it's the price we pay for being chemical free in an effort to help our environment a little

morningpaper · 30/11/2005 21:12

IT'S TOO HIGH

expatinscotland · 30/11/2005 21:18

No, it smells like vinegar. It's just that we don't mind and we burn a lot of oils anyway.

The store bought shower spray made us both gag.
