Havin a growth spurt and possibly hungry? Have you begun weaning ? My DS was similar. I couldn't believe what a poor sleeper he was compared to DD.
He ended up in our bed most night. By 9m it was vastly better. Now 12m and he's an excellent sleeper.
Keep going!

its not hunger as he has been weaned and still has a big bottle before bed, i think he does not like to be alone, hopefully as you suggest this may get better as he gets older, he has never slept well from the get go

6 months old is early to be completely dropping night feeds so I wouldn't rule out hunger. My DD still has the occassional night feed even now at nearly a year old. I have found that since 6/7 months she will sleep through for several weeks then will have a few days of waking up and needing an extra feed when she has a growth spurt.
