When did your DC go from 'Mummy' to 'Mum'?

My 3yo DS: 'Mummy, some people call their Mummy Mum. Can I call you Mum?'
Me: Noooooooooooo

something I ever dreamed would make me emotional, before I had children, tbh

i was mumma till age 3ish them mummy till around 4/5 now age 6 im just mum or mummy when she's after something, she picked that one up fast Hmm prob seen me calling my mum mummy when i want money or a babysitter

toddlerama · 14/06/2011 19:06

I have some friends who refer to their mum as 'mother' because she wont let them call her 'mum'. They are all in their 30s.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 14/06/2011 19:07

DD (5) calls me Mamma, Mummy and Mum in equal measures, DS (7) veers between Mum and Mummy. Tends to be Mum when they are calling out to me, Mummy or Mamma when just talking. I'm not sure when I want them to stop saying Mummy but am conscious that especially for DS it's going to start sounding babyish soon. I have no personal preference for being called any of them really, Mamma is sweet, but feel uncomfortable with adults using Mummy.

Both DS's still call me Mummy, unless they're with their friends. They are 10 and 8.

BellaBearisWideAwake · 14/06/2011 19:20

It's funny, generally I have been so excited at signs that DS is growing up, I'm not a fan of the baby phase much, but really surprised at my reaction to this!

DC's call us both. Have done since they were maybe 7 and 9?

belcantwait · 14/06/2011 19:27

All my dc still call me mummy and they are 6, 8 and nearly 13 (going on 18!!)
I will be sad when they start calling me mum instead Blush

tasmaniandevilchaser · 14/06/2011 19:28

My DDs at 18 and 20 still call me Mummy. I don't think they will call me Mum ever, they have been through the 'it's not cool' phase and it didn't really bother them. Though we/they all have many nicknames for each other so often use them instead. My MIL called her mother Mummy until she died in her eighties.

Am still mummy to my eldest son, aged almost 16! In front of his friends too and no one bats an eyelid.

To DD, almost 14, I am mummy or mother.

To ds2 (9) I am sometimes mummy but usually mama.

My kids have never called me mum (their choice, although I must say I prefer mummy) but if any of them are talking about me I am mum ie "I'll ask my mum".

Their father has only ever been daddy.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 14/06/2011 19:53

DD (3.5) occasionally says mum, but she does it to get a rise because we all burst out laughing when she says it.

I hate mum with a passion, it sounds whingey. My brother and I still call our mother mummy. That's who she is to us.

Missymoomum · 15/06/2011 02:35

I'd like to be mummy until my 2 are around 7 or 8 I think. They're only 2 and 4 at the mo so still go a while left. I will be sad when they move onto mum. However I remember my own mum wanting me to still call her mummy when I was in my teens. It was so embarrassing so I just refused!!

Dorje · 15/06/2011 02:48

Mamma, though my 6yo called me by my actual name today! TSK!
I don't like mum, that's my mum, and that's plenty!

mrsjohnsimm · 15/06/2011 02:56

DS (6) still says Mummy exclusively. DD1 (3) mostly says Mummy but will throw in occasional Mums or Mamas when the mood takes her.

oliviasmama · 15/06/2011 03:39

DD (3.5) still says Mummy, long may it last, I love Mummy, not a fan of Mum. I still say Mummy too Grin

IWouldNotCouldNotWithAGoat · 15/06/2011 03:55

2, and I'm fucked off about it.
