Unexplained fever in toddler

DD (2.5) has had a fever of 38-39 all weekend. It comes down to 36 after neurofen. She has no other symptoms. On googling (oops), it suggests a UTI if no other symptoms...or could it just be a virus? Should I get her to OOH dr today or do you think it can wait until tomorrow? She is fine in herself as we are keeping the fever at bay, but I am still concerned that it keeps coming back.

My DS had exactly this a few months ago, aged about 17mo. Temp got up to 40 (eep). We tried (unsuccessfully) to get a urine sample and it just went away after about 6 days. His wee didn't smell so I don't think it was an urine inf, I think it was a 'mystery virus'.

38-39 isn't too bad. As always - see OOH if you're worried but you're the best judge of her really, if she's ok and you can get the temp down, I'd be inclined to wait.

Is she eating and drinking ok? Lots of fluids is usually a good idea, even if it isn't a UTI.

Do what it says on the Neurofen/Calpol bottle and take her to a doctor if symptoms don't improve (fever comes back) after 2-3 few days, so tomorrow would be OK.

Look out for other symptoms too, the serious meningitis stuff and less serious off her food, bit ratty etc. DD had similar, then started vomiting and had to give a urine sample, cleared up after a few days by itself. It is such a worry when DC is sick, and if we can't put our finger on what it is our minds tend to fill in the gap with all sorts of possible horrors.

The temp itself isn't important as such, it's more how "unwell" your child is, and how the temp responds to the drugs (paracetamol or ibuprofen)
You say that the temp comes down after Nurofen, which is good. You also say she is well in herself, so again, good. It is if she is listless, breathless etc, and temp doesn't respond to drugs that you should worry

how is she now OP, my 2.8yo DD had this last week and we took her to docs after 4 days, on the monday, he suggesed a uti but told us if still same by friday bring her back with urine sample. She qas better by the friday.

Take DD to docs tomorrow just for peace of mind.

If the high fever is the only symptom but she is actually well, playing as usual and eating normally, it could be a virus called "roseola".
I found about this virus searching old mumsnet posts when my son also had high fever for 3-4 days with no other symptoms. As I remember, the high fever only lasts for a few days, then suddenly drops back to normal at the same time that a rash appears on the tummy, and only then the diagnosis can be confirmed.
If your daughter has any other symptoms, especially feeling unwell, loss of appetite, vomiting, etc, then it could be something more serious and it would be better to take her to the doctor.

Thanks all. She hasn't had a fever since yesterday morning so who knows what it was. I am just crossing fingers it's gone now!
