Dressing babies - whats your default option?

Just wondering what most people dress/dressed their under 1 yr olds in on a normal day?
I just ask because unless we are going out, dd (4.5 months) gets dressed in fresh sleepsuit in the mornings and stays in it all day (She does have some time naked, for a massage and after bath time in the evening). My reasoning being that it is warm, comfy (no waistband to rub or zips etc) and easy to change her nappy in. She's also nice and comfy at nap time then. Also I am a lazy mare who likes an easy option . I have other friends who dress their lo's in proper outfits everyday regardless of whether they are going out or not.
I guess its just personal preference. Is there any reason I shouldn't go the sleepsuit route?

Definitely sleepsuits good for little babes. When they get a bit older and crawling around I still stand by the body suit and dungarees combo.

PiccadillyCircus · 10/11/2005 16:58

DD (7 weeks) wears a mixture - I have to confess a liking for little dresses, although I can see the problem when she is crawling

bodysuit, either long or short sleeved, with long sleeved jersey top at this time of year, cottony/jersey trousers and gap socks. fleece on cold bright days or heavier coat when required. dd1 loves dresses and now she's 2.5 it's easier to let her wear them than when she was say 1, when they got tangled up in her legs and restricted her movement a bit.

I found keeping DD in dresses that were a bit on the short side ensured they didn't get in the way when she was crawling.

Rarrie · 10/11/2005 17:07

Mine wore sleepsuits as a newborn, but as soon as she was sitting, she always wore dresses. I didn't and still don't let her wear denim or skirts.

Once she was crawling, I used those next velevt trousers for everyday and dresses for going out. Once she could walk we went back to dresses most of the time, except when she was at nursery.

I like little girls in dresses, it doesn't last long, so I wanted to make the most of it!!

JessicaandRebeccasmummy · 10/11/2005 17:24

With Jessica i ALWAYS got her dressed in the morning.... be it a dress/t-shirt and trousers whatever.... now with Rebecca (justo ver 2 weeks old) i think she has only been dressed 3 or 4 times - the rest of the time in a sleepsuit and vest!

I know its probably laziness on my part, but its hard enough work getting myself and a 15 month old dressed of a morning without worrying about Rebecca too! She does get clean vest and sleepsuits twice a day though

triceratops · 10/11/2005 17:37

Sleepsuits are cute and comfy. I don't like grown up clothes on babies. Tiny leather jackets and trainers anyone? It is all personal preference though, so long as they are warm and comfortable who cares?

DD was a winter baby (December) and I found sleepsuits by far the most comfy, warm and practical for the first few months. Then we moved on to soft trousers and tops, but dresses...not much. I'm not really a dress person myself, and though I would have/would love to put some on DD occasionally, trousers always won out for comfort - she didn't walk until 16 months, and her knees were much happier in trousers. Now she's nearly two and loathes dresses - managed a few in the summer, but she loves her jeans! Her little pal, on the other hand, screams blue murder if her Mum tries to put her in trousers...

morningpaper · 10/11/2005 19:57

I stick knitted bootees and a cardigan or gilet over the sleepsuit.

Old ladies can't help themselves but stop and coo over the knitted stuff.

moondog · 10/11/2005 19:58

I'm with suedonim.
All in one, babygro and little cardi.
Ooooooh lovely!
All they wore until they started to walk.
Stiff itchy waistband on a little tum? No way.

No patterns though-only cream or white.

milward · 10/11/2005 20:04

My ds wears a babygro during the day as well - easy & comfy especially in a babysling.

starandsnowshaker · 10/11/2005 20:07

if its a cold day and im just going to work dd wears a sleepsuit along with her cosy fluffy sleepsuit aswell otherwise she wear her tracksuit or jeans etc

moondog · 10/11/2005 20:08

Best outer layer ever is one of those fleecy all in ones from JJMB.
So soft, arm and easy to put on,with little flaps for hands and feet.

bobbybob · 10/11/2005 20:14

I always dressed ds in day clothes, but when the time came to sell on any excess - it was all the day clothes that got sold. I'm not planning any more, but I can't bear to part with his sleepsuits and vests just in case - so practical.

Wallace · 10/11/2005 20:52

moondog - I always wanted one of those! If i ever have another baby I am getting one

moondog · 10/11/2005 20:54

Wallace, let me know, I'll pass mine on (still looking fab after twokids.)

Passed on my teeny tiny newborn one though to a little cold Kurdish baby which pleased me.

Roobie · 10/11/2005 20:57

I love those JJMB polartec all in one fleece suits .... great for shoving on over a stained sleepsuit so they look almost presentable!

HuggyBear · 10/11/2005 20:58

Mine wore sleep suits if we wernt going out until about 6 months, and if we were going out to just do the shopping or something i would just put a cardie or a jumper over the sleep suit (I love hand knitted cardies!)

Would put and outfit on them if were were going to anywhere special

I think babies look adorable in little sleep suits and hand knitted cardies!

albosmum · 10/11/2005 21:03

i love sleepsuits for babies until they are walking - they are easy etc - just like mandymac says.
and it really annoyed me when people say things like "still in the sleepsuit etc" - have you not dressed him etc

Bozza · 10/11/2005 21:28

moondog DD screamed blue murder on both occasions I tried to put her in one of those all-in-ones. Admittedly she was a May baby so the first time was Bonfire Night so she wasn't a real tiny by then. Was so glad that somebody gave it to me and I hadn't wasted the money. DS was the same. Was born in Feb so wore one the first month or so but the following winter - no way.

lucykate · 10/11/2005 21:46

dd was in sleepsuits all the time until about 3 months. ds has been in clothes but only because we've been given lots of clothes from other boys in the family and it seemed a shame not to make use of them. prefered daytime clothing is body suit, dungerees and wolly cardi preferably knitted by a grandma!

coppertop · 10/11/2005 21:53

Another vote here for sleepsuits and cardigans.

WickedWestCountryLass · 10/11/2005 22:36

Both of mine wore outfits or outfit tyoe suits, DD used to wear little stretchy trousers and tops or dresses as she has a very rotund belly.

Will I be lynched if I say I am not fond of babies in denim, jsut think it looks really uncomfy and a bit naff.

notasheep · 10/11/2005 22:38

mandymac,i adored babes staying in sleepsuits for as long as possible.after all what can a baby put in all those pockets of denim jeans and they do not need to run around in Nike trainers either!
