Dressing babies - whats your default option?

Just wondering what most people dress/dressed their under 1 yr olds in on a normal day?
I just ask because unless we are going out, dd (4.5 months) gets dressed in fresh sleepsuit in the mornings and stays in it all day (She does have some time naked, for a massage and after bath time in the evening). My reasoning being that it is warm, comfy (no waistband to rub or zips etc) and easy to change her nappy in. She's also nice and comfy at nap time then. Also I am a lazy mare who likes an easy option . I have other friends who dress their lo's in proper outfits everyday regardless of whether they are going out or not.
I guess its just personal preference. Is there any reason I shouldn't go the sleepsuit route?

I dressed my babies in sleepsuits at all times, If we went out she would have a coat or jumper over the sleepsuit. She was at least 6 months old before she wore anything else tbh. She stayed in the sleepsuit until it was dirty (so the same one at night too, but usually it meant changing once or twice a day - she was a v sicky baby.

DD always wore proper outfits - we were given piles of stuff. I always liked the routine of getting her properly dressed too, sort of showed her when daytime started and finished.

Not against sleepsuits though

Oh, my friends had always dressed theirs in daytime clothes too, so I guess it was what I was used to. If I had been friends with you n crunchie, it probably would have been sleepsuits!

WigWamBam · 10/11/2005 11:40

My dd was in sleepsuits until she was about 6 months old, for pretty much the same reasons as you give, mandymac. Dressing her in proper outfits was too much faff when she was so little, and as they always ended up with sick on them, sleepsuits were easier to get her in and out of!

Racers · 10/11/2005 11:42

same as fs - sooo much stuff given! not a sicky baby, which helps. forgive no caps - bf one hand typing with other!

Bozza · 10/11/2005 11:48

I went out everyday.

Gem754 · 10/11/2005 11:49

I was going to use sleepsuits but after Dd was born we were given so many outfits it seemed a shame not to use them.

Now I really enjoy getting her dressed each day, and when I put her in a sleepsuit at night she knows we'll be going to bed soon.

There's certainitly(sp?) nothing wrong with using sleepsuits all the time. Each to their own.

WigWamBam · 10/11/2005 11:49

I went out every day too. She still wore sleepsuits all the time!

dejags · 10/11/2005 11:50

a mixture - depending on what we are doing. If spending the day at home then DS's would stay dressed in comfy tracksuit bottoms with a bodysuit on underneath if cold and just a short sleeve bodysuit if warm.

If going out I like to dress them up a bit more - nothing OTT but probably dungarees or jeans.

mandymac · 10/11/2005 11:51

We did get give lots of outfits, but so many were impractical. I don't understand the dreaded denim pinifore dress - dd has about 4 and everytime I put her in one, the skirt ends up round her middle and the straps somewhere up around her ears! Does show off her lovely comedy nappy bum though .

She's off to nursery in January and I'm guessing sleepsuits every day just won't cut the mustard there, although I think that will be the 'spare' outfit option

I always dressed mine in babygros when very small - I don't see the point of putting fancy clothes on a baby - comfort and warmth are the main priorities imo

WigWamBam · 10/11/2005 11:55

Oh dresses ... pains in the bum. We were given stacks of dresses (mainly by mums of boys, it has to be said - the mums of girls gave us sleepsuits!) and I felt they were just more trouble than they were worth. Plus dd was never comfortable in them.

She went into trousers and dungarees at about 6 months, and actually wouldn't even have a dress on her back until she was three and discovered being girlie. Now I can't get her into trousers to save my life!

flamesparrow · 10/11/2005 11:56

I never had any problem with dresses... am I odd???

clary · 10/11/2005 11:58

wwb I'm the same as you with dresses. We had two dresses given to dd in 12-18 mo size, no way could she wear them cause she was crawlign everywhere!
Like others here, I did sleepsuits for little baby, sometimes with a pair of soft dungarees over to make it a bit mor e"daytimey" and a bit waarmer for ds2 who was orn in cold April.
My older 2 were summer babies so just wore a vest or s/s romper and not a lot else!

flamesparrow · 10/11/2005 12:00

Crawling age I understand the problem...

The problem I had with pinafore dresses was that the top would ride up but I got round this by buying cheap long sleeved bodysuits from Asda to wear under them. It was the same with DS in dungarees. Usually when I buy an outfit for a baby girl (and I did this week) I buy some soft (maybe fleecy lined) dungarees and a matching body suit because I think this is a reasonable compromise between practical, comfortable and looking good. And in practice I reckon most people end up with loads of dresses. Buy the same sort of combo for baby boys as well.

DD was born in May and I did actually buy her a "dress" but it was really just a vest with a bit of embroidery on and a little cotton skirt sewn on. Was v. practical and she looked pretty and wore the sun hat that came with it loads.

EmMUK74 · 10/11/2005 12:17

I have always dressed DD in proper clothes but then we waited 4 years for her so I can't stay away from the clothes shops! LOL However I try to get all soft outfits if we are around the house rather than jeans or anything.

the only thing I won't dress her in are dresses now its cold, tights are definitely too much even for me.

Wallace · 10/11/2005 12:20

Quite often mine atyed in their nightime sleepsuit, with a pinafore dress or pair of dungarees over it. Perfetc because you don't need to bother with tops or tights or socks, and keeps baby warm and cosy

WigWamBam · 10/11/2005 12:26

My problems with dresses were that, when dd was tiny, they used to ride up, weren't made of such a soft material and weren't as flexible as the sleepsuits, and didn't seem as comfortable to be lying in all the time. When she started to crawl she got caught in them and had to wear dungarees because she did a commando crawl and skirts or trousers would end up being dragged off. When got older, and was old enough to express a preference, the problem became one of refusal to wear dresses.

Horses for courses though; some people love them, some people loathe them. Not wearing dresses worked for us better than wearing dresses did.

mandymac · 10/11/2005 12:33

Ok - confession, when I say that I put dd in a proper outfit to go out, what I actually mean is that I put a pair of jeans or combats and a cardi over ............. a sleepsuit! . She is a master of sock disposal and that is my excuse.

I used sleepsuits all day for probably first couple of months - then I would be getting into more of a routine so there was a definite transition betwen night and day so would dress them in day clothes - but usually these were just pull on trousers / leggings and simple tops. Did get a few dresses for dd but she looked daft in them until she was bigger.

wysiwyg · 10/11/2005 12:38

Usually do dress DS (now 1).
Initially for school run I just used to put him in his sleepsuit straight into an all in one padded suit for warmth. Twas fine.
All through this last hot summer though I put him in a bodysuit and pair of shorts most days.
Sleepsuits are fine. They aren't babies very long. I despair a bit that boys clothes from 3 months onwards are very much jeans/ t shirts/ I'm a little monster type stuff - not very babylike at all. I think he's got the next 15 years or whatever to wear stuff like that.
Just do what fits you - don't care what anyone else thinks.

suedonim · 10/11/2005 16:52

I vote for sleepsuits day and night. In a clean sleepsuit with a hand-knitted cardie on top babies are so deliciously squishy to hold and they look perfectly edible!
