Who is clearly an alcoholic who walks down my street some times with a dog on a lead, some times with a child of about 6/7.
This child i presume goes to the school at the end of my road and wears a uniform.
The man (presumably the dad) walks the child to and some times from school, i never see child with a woman.
I have seen the man at 11 in the morning mindless, this morning at 9am he went into a house on my row with another man with 4 huge bottles of strongbow cider in a plastic bag.
So, i was wondering about ringing the school.
I dont know any thing about these people except the man is with a child and is mindless in the day.
What should i do?

Who picks the child up Donbean? Do you know?

compo · 07/11/2005 10:11

Do you see him pick up the child after school?

suzywong · 07/11/2005 10:14

call the school
Even if you've seen him pick the child up once, it's still a worry, so call the school.

don't stand around and do nothing

skinnycow · 07/11/2005 10:17

i agree call the school.

Donbean · 07/11/2005 10:19

I have no idea who picks the child up, they walk past my house occassionally, the man does not apear to be drunk on these occassions.

It hasnt particularly concerned me till now as the child is not with him when he is drunk.
This morning however, i am worried about who will pick the boy up, are the school aware of this family. With no names, no address and no other info im not even sure if the kid goes to that school as there a re a couple in the area.
Hm, am going to phone the school.

Twig, i feel anxious enough by this, im not standing round doing nothing, im agonising over it...and going to do something

skinnycow · 07/11/2005 10:24

it is possible donbean that the school may be aware of the situation so you may not need to have to provide address etc

fireflyfairy2 · 07/11/2005 10:30

you'd feel bad if you did nothing, I think you're doing the right thing calling the school.. no teacher should let a child out of school with a person who is obviously dependant on alcohol. Good Luck and I hope you get somewhere with this

Donbean · 07/11/2005 10:35

Just rang the school spoke to the head.
He is not familiar with my description and is not aware of any child with an alcohilic parent as he says that kids from these kind of backgrounds are almost always late regularly for school.
He is going to ring around some local schools and see if he can find the child.
Taken my name and number and will get back to me.
Says to ring SS if i have grave concerns.
Dont feel any better

sorry .. didn't mean to sound snippy .. was just trying to push you from the standing around feeling anxious to action as it is all to easy to think its someone else's problem

well done you

Pennies · 07/11/2005 10:44

If he's walking with the child then the school must be pretty close. Can you follow him maybe? Perhaps a bit OTT tho.

katierocket · 07/11/2005 10:49

I agree that Social Services would be a good call.

Donbean · 07/11/2005 10:51

I could, but feel uncomfortable about this because he always looks at me and he had to stop one day when i was pulling out of my drive.
My ds would only draw attention to us!
Could wear a balaclava SAS styley couldnt i!
I cannot bear any thing to do with children and ill treatment. It distresses me to the extent that i cant sleep if i even catch a snipet of a story, cant stop thinking about it and it makes me really quite ill so this has been bugging me since i saw the guy mindless at 11am that morning.
However, the way i feel about is not of significance, this little boy is.

Hiya DB - good on you for ringing the school- Have you seen what uniform he has? Maybe if you let the Head know he will know automatically which school the uniform is from. I'd ring SS as well just to let them know.

Gem754 · 07/11/2005 10:56

You said the boy wears a uniform. Can you match it to one of the local schools?

Donbean · 07/11/2005 10:58

I dont even know what the child looks like, i just tend to watch the father. I will have a proper look tonight at school home time, see if i can see him.
Its all very vague isnt it, but you know in your gut thats its not right dont you.
Have any of you been in a similar situation?

bubblerock · 07/11/2005 11:00

HI bubblerock how are you? Had a busy season hun?

OP posts:
bubblerock · 07/11/2005 11:33

Hello - end of the season!!!!!! I know it's business but the illuminations are a crazy time aren't they? It will be great to be able to go into town without jostling with tourists! Now I've got a winter of accounts to catch up on and a website to redo!

Hmmm - not sure about the uniform, you could give Rawcliffes a ring (01253 628337) they should know which schools wear those colours in the area.

Good on you for taking an interest, most people look the other way unfortunately.
