Cot to bed?

Just wondering how old toddler should be before we move him from his cot to a bed? Is there an "ideal age" for this?

Think it varies hugely. DS1 was 3.3 - he was in a cotbed before so plenty of space. I would do it when they're sleeping through pretty reliably and when they're sensible enough to not get out of bed and do silly things. Some toddlers are climbers though, and have to be moved out of a cot earlier.

dd was 2 and ds was 2 1/2

DS1 was nearly 3 but DS2 went into the bottom bunk recently at age 1.9 Shock so no guidance but I'd say if it ain't broke, why fix it & leave it as long as possible if there are no problems.

We moved dd from cot to single bed ( no 'toddler bed' inbetween) when she was 2. To our amazement she never once got out of it not even on the first night! I imagine all children are very different though and know many parerents wait until about 3 aswell.

We moved our climber to his cot bed at aged 1 year 10 months.

He was so good, no bother really, though we did invest in a Lindam rail to give him some safety in the night as he's a mover! But have someone to help you put that together if you do get one, as it's a FUCKER to put together!

I'd say keep him in cot and sleeping bag for as long as you possibly can! DD1 had a fairly smooth transition from cot to bed at around 22 months before DD2 was born as I needed the cot. DD2 was a climber and so went into a bed at 18 months which was a real pain, she would bounce around in her room for ages in the evenings then pass out on the floor. DS is currently 25 months and as he is not a climber (and most certainly no baby no.4 on the way so cot not needed elsewhere) I'm planning on leaving him in it for as long as I can - which will probably be until he stops wearing night nappies and needs to be able to get out of bed to go to the loo (which with my girls was around 2 and a half but with some children is much later so we'll see) it just makes bedtimes so much easier when they can't run around for hours causing trouble!
