When my DD started she had 2 weeks trial and then if she wanted to join she had to have the uniform for when she was sworn in.

We bough one after 3 weeks of going. Then he enrolled on the 4th week.

I'm a beaver leader and would definitely say just wait and see how he gets on.
We have boys and girls who will come for 3 or 4 weeks then change their mind. We dint di their promise until they are sure they want to keep coming and would normally have a chat to mum or dad to see how the child is enjoying it and talk about when they will do their promise, this gives the parent time to buy the jumper etc.

It can be quite expensive depending how much kit you buy, most o ours just have the jumper but some will have the T shirt and hats too, you could also ask your leader once you know that DS is committed if they have a stick of old jumpers they pass on or sell, we often do when ours move on to the cubs the parents will donate their old jumpers.

Wait until the leaders tell you he is ready for enrollment.

You only need the sweatshirt, but get a big size so it lasts. I am so glad I did this as DS's is literally covered in badges, and I don't fancy taking them all off and sewing them on a new one!

BTW, thanks so much to all the fab beavers / cubs / scouts leaders out there - both mine love/have loved it. [csmile]

A tip for badges, don't struggle with a needle and thread, especially as the badges are very thick and hard to get a needle through, buy badge fix from your scout shop or online. It's about a fiver a tube but has so far done my DS through the beaver, halfway through the scouts and my leader badges too!!

how long is it usually until they take their oath? Not too sure about the group my Ds goes - it seems to be taking forever.

LawrieMarlow · 01/05/2011 21:09

With DS's old Colony it took half a term so about 6 weeks. Then we moved house (not related to Beavers in any way Grin).

It depends on lots of things, the group, the leaders, the child. Some may do it after a coupler o weeks, otters will wait until a child is really settled. Some might do them in a batch so wait until 2 or 3 are ready.

The best thing to do is have a xhat with the leaders and see what they say.
