Anyone doing/done phd that 'cheated' and paid someone to transcribe interviews?

ok, I know I 'should' transcribe all my interviews myself, I have done 10 but have 20 left to do and my time is so limited with childcare and I need to be analysing and writing up now!

Has anyone out there paid someone else to transcribe their interviews? Was it ok? How much did you pay and how did you find the person to do it? Any tips?

Ooh, I'd love to do that kind of work!

I'll be watching with interest to see if it's legal.
Sorry I'm no help!

who says that you 'must' transcribe yourself?

Are there rules and suchlike?

i havent done this but my DH has transcribed for other phd students and it seems legit. He's currently doing hos own transcription for his phd at the mo but would normally charge 90p per audio min.

AliciaFlorrick · 20/04/2011 18:33

I know of a transcription company that transcribes for students they're very good. If you would like their details don't hesitate to send me a PM.

NormanTebbit · 20/04/2011 18:34

I think it's ok but my tutor has sadi that it doesn't necessarily save time because as you transcribe, you are processing the information.

notremotelyintofootie · 20/04/2011 18:35

I know it is 'allowed' just that the transcription is considered the first stage of analysis but I have so little time to do it i'd love to have it done....especially as I have lost my hard drive full of data!

90p per transcription minute eh?

Paying smeone else to transcribe is mok as long as you've done some of the transcribing yourself, so that you understand the process. however it is very expensive to pay others to do it. google transcriing services and you will see that. Each hour of interview recording takes about 6 hours to trancribe

crystalglasses · 22/04/2011 13:45

sorry 'ok' not 'mok'. My computer keys are sticky

notremotelyintofootie · 22/04/2011 15:19

That's ok crystal! I often do that, blooming iPhone touch pad!

I think I am going to have to bite the bullet and do the rest myself somehow.... I have approx 1000 mins to type (19 interviews...) so if I did that solidly after my transfer report, teaching, marking I should clear it within a month so perhaps by end of June.....

Have you heard of Dragon software? You may find it a useful tool.
