Is a new matress needed?

Not sure if this is the right place to post this, but I would appreciate some advice about cot and moses basket matresses. I have been given both items by my sister and SIL. My sister says that there is no need to buy a new matress as nephew wasn't a sickly child. Matress is 5 yrs old and made of foam. It looks fine, but I'm not sure about taking risks re cot death etc. Moses basket matress is 13 yrs old so probably needs replacing anyway. Sister says it's fine to replace if necessary, but MW says that I MUST replace - I don't begrudge buying a new one at all, but is it necessary? What happens if you have more than one child, do you buy a new matress each time?

I would replace it just to be on the safe side. I saw somwhere that its ok to use a matress for more than one child (your own kids) but as it is 5 years old i would get a new one.

imo they should be changed with every child
