Feeling a bit sad and silly...

Noticed that dd (6 weeks 5 days old) had a very red mark on the front of her neck this afternoon in the crease. On closer inspection it was a wee bit weepy looking and smelt a bit. Phoned the GP who reckons it's a sweat rash and very common as babies have wee chubby necks but I still feel bad about it, paticularly that I hadn't noticed sooner. Didn't notice anything there last night when we bathed her although from what the GP said it's probably been there around 24hrs.

She's been a little irritable all day and finally dropped off to sleep 1/2 hour ago. Never even thought about her neck being a problem with her always having her chin down - know about cleaning her wee face and stuff in the mornings (has evening baths) but just wasn't aware this could happen. Feeling a bit stupid and really feel for dd as she wasn't overlly impressed at having her neck washed and the prescribed cream applied. Feel like it's my fault and a bit sad dispite the reassurance from GP that it's a common prob for babies. Hoping it will clear up quickly - any tips for preventing reoccurance?

this happened to ds a couple of times despite always cleaning it in the bath each night!
it really is common!

i make sure to powder under his chin after his bath and if he gets dribbly or sweaty we give it a quick wipe

Thanks - good tip re: powder - normally do her wee feet and armpits, hadn't thought about her neck. Was really alarmed by her neck it just looks so sore and in such a short time too - looks worse than is I think?!

yeah i think it probably does! i think i put some sudocrem on ds's til it healed.. but only took a day or so to go!

Gp has prescribed Caneston HC for dd, told to apply 3 times a day until clears. Kinda adding to the guilt as it's a very mild steriod and it feels wrong using it on a young baby however if it helps and means she's not sore... Will keep sudocreme in mind if it re-occurs especially if I notice it quicker next time (hoping there won't be a next time).

Yup, I was recommended to use baby powder by my hv too. A tip - she recommended putting powder onto your fingertips, away from the baby, then sweeping fingers under his chin, so as to avoid him breathing it in. I do it with ds lying on a changing mat on the floor, and snap my fingers above his head to get him to look up so I can get access with the other hand!

miaou that's what i do too! otherwise i end up putting clouds of it on his face! lol

i have to actually hold his head up though as he knows all my other tricks! lol

Good ideas - I really struggled to get at her neck earlier and am dreading the pfaff every time I've got to get this cream on. I've got Avent liquid talc, do you think that'll be ok or should I get some of the usual powder stuff? I guess diff hv's tell you diff things, never been mentioned by any of the health care folk involved with us so far.

I didn't notice the same thing on ds and felt the same
I didn't use anything, just kept it clean and made sure it was try (lifted his head and used a tissue). It soon goes.

Thanks everyone! Am loving being a mum for the first time - have been overwhelmed at times by the feelings that are provoked when you're a parent - I hate seeing dd sad and always feel like I'll burst with joy/pride when she smiles at us. This parenting thing is fun and scarey too!

LOL, was about to post on July antenatal to ask about a rather red crease hidden deep in dd's (16 weeks) neck's chubbly bits...

We noticed her's yesterday, looked really nasty and raw, but a quick cleanse / dry / sudocrem (repeat a couple of times a day for a few days) and it's cleared up lovely.

It's so funny digging deep into chubby land, isn't it ?

The childminder had to point out that the creases in ds's nappy area were sore last week . He's 1yo now, you'd think I'd know to look!!

I'm so glad it's not just me! My sis just phoned and when I mentioned it she said she'd had the same with my niece.

Hub2dee - baby chubby bits are just so cute, love my dd's double chin! Can't believe your wee one is 16 wks already - doesn't seem that long since we were all admiring the scan photo of her feet!

Feeling less like a bad mummy now -

Man, you could get lost in dd's deepest chubbly bits... they're very well hidden, LOL.

The same happened with DD2 . DD1 had been far from chubby, no creases whatsoever, so with DD2 I just hadn't thought to check under her neck...her armpits were prone to it too.

I used a powder from the chemist called 'CZ' IIRC. It's a mild antiseptic powder (like sterzac) and worked a treat.

Oh goodness, ds had cheesy rolls for a couple of weeks before I figured out I was supposed to clean them out.

BTW, I thought that talcum powder was supposed to be bad for your lungs or sommit... does everyone use it after a bath except us ???? LOL

Aw - we had that. I used a bit of baby lotion on cotton wool ball to hunt out the cheese in dd's neck folds - dd loved it and thought it was a great game! I then used to put a bit of sudocream on too. We don't need to do it anymore, but I still do, as she loves it so much!

It is, hub2dee, hence the precautions of applying it with your fingers rather than straight from the container. Also overuse of powder will block the pores so my hv said only use it under the chin, don't powder the baby liberally.

Baby powder used to contain talcum, whihc is a potentially dangerous substance - it doesn't any more. If you look at it closely it's not white any more, it's a very pale grey - that's because there is no talcum in the powder.

wait until the sore chin and chest from teething dribbles starts! DD was permanently bibbed.
And the other day I felt guilty because she told me her ear ached and I didn't believe her. (3yo now) Next morning brown gunky stuff all over her pillow and earlobe.
