Grommets and anedoids

I went to a consultant today with my 3 yo ds. I sensed he was having trouble hearing and he also snores and has constant colds since November.

The consultant said that they are told to advise everyone to go the medical route first, using antibiotics, but the reality is this isn't going to work and he needs to have his adenoids out and grommets put in. He gave me a prescription for a month of antibiotics but said to phone him if I wanted him to have the surgery before that.

Does anyone have any opinions on other options? The implications of waiting for a while? Would you go the antibiotics route first?

I'm really reluctant to put him under general anaesthetic

I think you need to move this to children's health. My DD had grommets put in a year ago, she never had infections though. Hers were for glue ear and loss of hearing.
Prior to the grommets (which the consultant recommended first off) she had about six months of saline inhalations followed by blowing a balloon up with her nose. when it became apparent that despite her nose hole gymnastics, her hearing wasn\t improving, she had the grommets.

DD had grommets in last week for glue ear. We had waited 2 years as I too was reluctant to have her undergo GA, and it didn't seem to have affected her speech etc too much. However, she had a cold this winter that seemed to make hearing much worse so we thought the time had come.
She was fine, procedure very quick, she made everyone laugh demanding her lunch straight after having had to fast before surgery. Now she covers her ears at loud noises e.g. ambulance siren / children in park, so we can see it has had an effect - hopefully she'll get used to how loud things are soon!
