Quick poll please how old was dc when 1st got laptop?

Title says it all, under immense pressure from my 11 yr old dd for one

15-16 maybe.

I dont see why a child needs their own laptop.

Cartainly not unrestricted internet access either which is how it oftens ends up being, if you see some of the pics teen girls have posted on FB [shudder-cringe]

My eldest had one when she started gcse's, my 2nd daughter has just had one as tesco's had a fab offer on and she starts her gcse's in september.
My 8 and 6 year old sons use the old dell hand me down under supervision.
I have one, i've never paid more than £300 for a basic laptop and they are perfectly adequate. Can't see much point in buying children a laptop before they start high school, most children seem to prefer ipod touch's for internet access or they use the wii or xbox.

My son got his own laptop at 11 to use for secondary school because they do a lot of work for school on a pc. DSS and DSD got theirs aged 9 and 7 and that's a huge no no... they have theirs with their mother.. we do have rules for all internet use by children.. ( x/box live pc etc..) the comps can be set up to go "offline" at certain times my sons goes off at 9pm until 9am. he is not allowed internet usage until after 10am.. he is allowed 2 hours non school work time a day on either laptop or x/box but homework is unlimited but has to be done as a priority. children are not allowed on any computer for half an hour after eating a meal so they don't rush it. he can use his computer in his bedroom but again internet is set so we can view what he is doing from downstairs so he is monitored at all time even though he doesn't know it.
