You know they say newborns need one more layer than adults?

Because they can't regulate their own temperature.

At what age does that stop?

My 23 month old was just in the garden with a long sleeved t shirt and cardigan on. He went to take the cardigan off but dp told him to leave it on, I told him it was fine, it's not that cold out here.

Then dp mentioned the one extra layer 'rule'. I said I'm not sure it counts at this age. If he's old enough to take his own jumper off then he must know he's too warm with it on!

So can you clear this up for us?

I would think at that age he would soon let you know if he was uncomfortably cold.

I wouldn't worry too much.

I think that the opposite is prob true for my two outside- they run around much more than me. They're five and two.

By about 12 months they can start to regulate their own body temperature.

And I agree if he's old enough to try and take it off, he's old enough to take it off!

I haven't followed that rule for a few months and my DD is 6 mo. I think you just have to know your child. My DD bakes if she is inside with more than one layer. Can your DS indicate to you when he is hot?

Thank you for your replies.

breathslowly. He doesn't talk yet but I would guess that him trying to take his jumper off was him indicating he was too hot. I still keep an extra layer on my 6month old because he seems like a cold baby, he's never really warm to touch. Just cool. But I've just been dressing toddler like I would myself.

Guess I'll tell dp I was right then. He'll love that. Grin
