How old for highchair?

DS is a (big) 13 weeks old and a sociable and nosey little lad. We both want to make sure that he's included / aware of dinner time and that it's a family affair.

However, this means that dinner has to be eaten on the sofa and not at the table and passing him to and fro as we take turns to eat. We've put him in an Ikea highchair (with blow up insert) for a few seconds and he seemed to like it and be quite secure but all the advice says 6 months minimum.

Did any of you lovely people use a highchair from earlier? Is the advice based on neck strength / ability to sit up unaided or just age?

Thanks!

I think it's about back and neck strength - he needs more support for his developing body. How about a Bumbo on a dining chair?

They should sit up to be in a high chair. Can't he be in a bouncy chair and see you if you're on your sofa? I'm a little bit Confused about your requirement for him to be involved in teatime when he's some way off weaning, seems a tad PFB to me!

The Graco highchair I have bought says from 4 months. My boy is very big for his age too - 99th percentile - so I am thinking of putting him in it soon too.

Can't he just sit on one of your knees?

We had a Trip trap highchair for DD. She was able to sit unaided at 17 weeks and used the highchair from 5 months.

What did people do when the advice was to start weaning at 4 months? They went in high chairs didn't they? That's a genuine question not a sarky one, by the way.

Tripp trapp has a new attachment for newborns so it can be used from birth.

You can buy my M&P Primo Papa Evo if you'd like :) Fine from 4mo.

We have the Ikea highchair for DD2. She started sitting at the tanble with us at about 5mths and started BLW at 6mths.
As long as he can sit comfortably and hold his own head up without flopping forward then he should be fine.

I wouldnt worry too much about involving him too much in mealtimes though. Once he starts eating will be fine.
