Just had my viva (posted below) and yeah pass with minor corrections!

It's taken me so long to finish - I've sweated blood and tears. When do you officially get to call yourself dr?

i officially changed my name once i had my degree certificate as thats what the bank asked for a copy of.

At work once i'd submitted by corrections.

Congratulations!

As soon as you pass the viva and submit the corrections that PhD and its title are yours. Mind you, people at work were calling me Dr as soon as I came out of the exam room with a smile on my face!

Some places may ask to see your certificate but I've never been asked for it.

Congratulations!

I think technically it is when you do your corrections. Your unviersity will then send you a transcript saying you have passed etc etc.

Mine addressed me as 'Mrs' on this Hmm but then again they refuse to call me 'Dr' at work still because I havent shown them a copy of my PhD certificate...even though I passed it at the same uni Hmm Hmm

I called myself it to friends from my viva though...jokingly really. I still havent got round to changing anything and dont really use it outside of an academic context

Well done!

Thanks! I'm not one for titles generally but it's been a long hard road and I'm so proud of it! I'm going to get everything changed and t-shirts made I think!!

Grin

I usually bring my Dr title out when dealing with difficult people calling me 'Miss'. Works like a dream Grin

Thanks guys!!! I spend so much time dealing with difficult bureaucrats (either through the statementing process for my son or for supporting my disabled brother) and I get sick of being called Mrs or Miss when I am Ms, I just can't wait to flash that Dr bit!!

Congratulations, and let's see those t-shirts!!

benito · 04/03/2011 09:26

Thanks!!

Do you think it is appropriate to email my external and thank her? She was very fair and supportive and gave me helpful tips about restructuring the section I need to look at again. Or is that not done?

Congrats benito. Well done now maybe i should look forward to mine as I hope to submit it 2 weeks or so! Not sure about the protocol for external examiners but as it shouldn't now influence the result can't see the harm
