Advertising to Children

What do you think about advertising to children on the net? I am a mum and an MP and this morning I went to a meeting with the Advertising Standards Agency, where they said they were introducing new standards on ads to children. They said parents could control what their children see by using a privacy button, but do you think most parents know about this, let alone use it? It seems to me they are shuffling off their responsibilities onto us (all the execs were men!) and we need something tighter. Of course mumsnet mums are probably the best informed! What about others? I would be really grateful to hear your views to feed in to how we take this forward in parliament.

Like what, give use a link as an example.

I am not sure what the privacy button is but I am not sure i want MPs controlling the internet in the name of protecting our children.

Parents should be more informed about controlling the net not new laws that will end up covering lots of other things.

I think if your child is using the internet you need to make it your business to find out what is there in terms of protection.
Of course we need to set standards on advertising aimed at Children - but the responsibility IS with the parent surely ?
The Government needs to make laws to protect children but we parents should not blindly trust they are protected - its down to us.
