Do you work in silence?

I cannot concentrate if there is noise. Or that is my theory. So why am I perfectly capable of ignoring my boys play fighting with light sabres and the girls, one with Nickleback and the other with Jessie J playing. And sometimes, I can block out the BEKO (for BEKO read V NOISY) washing machine that sends the dog into crazy barking as it spins, yet I insist I need utter nun like silence to work?

How do you work? If you listen to music, do you change the genre according to what you are studying?

I listen to music with no words - if it has words it distracts me. Or words in another language is fine.

Just something to block out the background noise yet not be distracting in itself.

It depends on what work you are doing really. My family think I should have been male - because I'm only able to do one thing at once (i.e. not block out noise and work). It doesn't seem to register that the one thing is a PhD thesis, so not like I'm writing a letter to Grandma is it?! Oooh I can feel a rant coming on.

So, er, that would be silence for me Wink!

Moulin Rouge soundtrack disc 2 seems to work for me!

I have my mp3 headphones in and play all music on shuffle. Strangely seem to be stuck on muse at the moment though.
Has to be headphones though, adds to 'sealed off' aura!

can't work in silence. Too weird!

I need silence. Actually I have discovered I work most effectively in the university library as at home silence evn when home alone is just not quite right. I study a very academic subject that requires HUGE amounts of reading so maybe this impacts.
