Hi,

My 7-day old baby who is formula fed is just so sleepy all the time. Sometimes, she will have a massive feed then not at all. I just tried to feed her and she just had an ounce with her eyes shut then wouldn't take any more as she goes all floppy.

Any advice, as i am feeling stressed out over this!!

I think you should see a GP or your midwife quickly

A floppy sleepy baby is a worry

take her clothes off her so she isn't too warm - if she is cold she will stay awake.
Also see GP or midwife to get her checked out

but she is not always like it...she gets so tired she literally just won't have anymore. she has spent a week in hospital as she had a little infection after birth but got all clear yesterday passing all her observations even putting weight on so..is it me just stressing? she just took 2 ounces

DD didn't feed for the first couple ofdays, but I'd be worried if it had gone on longer than that. See your GP.

At seven days old the midwive should still be visiting you - if she's not due today I'd ring and explain the situation.

Hopefully she will be able to put your mind at rest - its not a problem that I experienced so can't give any advice but if you are worried you're right to ask for help.

If he's been checked out and he has no medical problems the it could be he's tiring himself out during feeding.

My son was also formula fed and we had an issue with him having an ounce or two, going to sleep while on the bottle, and not having any more.

My mam said the teats were too slow for him and he was wearing himself out from sucking so hard to get at the milk. I thought that was the daftest thing ever but I bought a couple of the next sized teats to try them and she was actually right! As soon as I put the new teats on he was taking more of his feed, he'd usually go to sleep not long after finishing but he wasn't wearing himself out during. It could be worth a try, just replace one or two teats at first though to test it because they can be quite expensive depending on your brand.

If he's still having trouble then speak to the Health Visitor and ask her to watch him suck on the bottle. It could be the teat is the wrong shape or he's my getting a proper grip on it.

We also had a sleepy baby (she was in scbu had infection etc) the nurses told us to feed her away from us, so her head was resting in our hand just on top of our knees (I really hope that makes sense!)

Also change nappy halfway through feed, can always wipe with cold water and cotton wool...we also went straight onto size 3 teats just to try and get her to drink quicker.

It used to take us an hour to get dd to drink 70mls so keep going you are doing great, I would keep trying with the milk for up to an hour, you don't want her to get into the habit of having 1 or 2 ounces every hour if you can help it.

I hope this helps you!

agree with sunndydays but also is she jaundiced - this can make them sleepy. You need to get extra in in this case. I also agree - speak to your midwife - she can tell you if she's getting enough. try not to worry though if she gets the all clear from the midwife she won't starve herself
hope this helps!

My dd was jaundiced too, it is difficult, and it really used to annoy me when people said 'oh never wake a sleeping baby' she would have gone all day without a feed if she had had it her way!

PinkiePoo · 19/02/2011 12:24

well she found her lungs at half 1 this morning. Daddy fed her at 11....only a small amount though, and didn't go to sleep so i could see her rooting, fingers in mouth etc, so gave her a bottle early and was guzzling it down. She is only having about 2 oz, which is not really enough, but i can't force her to have it. Guess i am just gonna have to chill out for a while. Got health visitor tomorrow so may just mention it again to her, but she said before don't stress out over amounts...only if she is having nothing at all!
