9 month old pulling her own hair

Dd has just started pulling her hair when very tired. I'm finding it quite distressing as I associate hair pulling with real stress :(

we cosleep and she's carried around a lot so I wouldn't have thought she was lacking attention or cuddles.

Is this just a thing or should I be worried?

my little boy would do this, in the end we bought him a fluffy lion so that he play with the mane

we also took the very drastic step of shaving off his own hair so that he couldn't pull it.

It worked

I think there's a difference between pulling and pulling out. Pulling is something some children just do as a comfort feeling (seems strange to us). Pulling out I'm not sure about so wouldn't want to comment.

Very distressing for you. Big hugs. x

Thanks :)

it's not coming out and it only seems to be when she's really tired and on the verge of sleep. I'm just worried that it's either a sign that she's very stressed and therefore we are doing something to make her so OR that it's the beginning of a longer term problem.

My 13 month old used to pull her hair often, especially when feeding, probably at about your LO's age or younger. It's only reading your post that has made me think, oh yeah, she does't do that anymore!!

So probably she will grow out of it without you doing anything. I thought it was probably because she was just discovering her hair and interested in the feel of it, or as previous people have said as a comfort thing - I doubt it is a sign of stress unless there are other signs too.

That's quite reassuring CatL :)

My DS (9 months) likes to do this too, mainly when feeding (breast or bottle). I don't think he is pulling it out, but it is starting to seem a little sparser in some places than others.

I think he likes the feel of his hair TBH and he usually does it with my fringe, if I lean forward enough, instead of his own hair. I think it is a phase and they'll grow out of it soon.

My DS went through a very short phase of pulling his hair out (I can't remember what age) but it stopped very quickly

My ds 8 months has been doing this for a while when tired. Pulling at it not pulling it out. I also have three daughters and at least one of them did it too at around the same age.

My dc started doing this at your childs age, she is nearly one now and doesn't do it quite so often. I think that she quite likes the feel of her haid through her fingers and that it comforts her.

Again if she does do it it is always when she is just about to go to sleep.
