Have tried persuading DD why she should not allow herself to be ripped off and part with £69 of her birthday money on a JW hoodie.
Suggestions please?

Yes, there were loads of things like this when I was growing up. Benneton sweatshirt is the one that springs to mind.

I never was allowed to have them and I didn't have money to buy them myself, so for that reason I'd let her get it. Yes, it's a "waste" but it'll be well worth it to her.

Knackeredmother · 06/02/2011 18:20

There were loads of must haves when I was growing up; dash tracksuits, pod shoes, Nike airs, head bags, naf naf, ton sur ton, Cabrini coats, mau mau stuff. I even remember when next was sophisticated, oh and poison perfume!!!!

And I must add I bought them all with birthday/part time work money and my mum thought I was mad!

TrillianAstra · 06/02/2011 18:28

Let her use her birthday money how she likes. If she wants to spend it on an overpriced hoodie, then she can't spend it on anything else. That's an important lesson.

Dash tracksuits
Now that's a blast from the past
I had a fetching one in pink and grey

TequilaMockinBird · 06/02/2011 18:37

Oh god, my 13 is also obsessed with Jack Wills.

We bought her a hoody and a tshirt for Christmas and I'm actually really impressed with the quality!

She wears the hoody all the time, I have to wash it through the night while she sleeps lol so i will get my moneys worth at least!

When I was her age it was Paco cardigans Blush they were awful, at least some of the JW stuff is actually quite smart looking!

Deaddei · 06/02/2011 18:41

Let her. It's her money.
Dd (14)got one for her big present at Xmas-she wears it all weekend, washes well, doesn't need ironing.
And she has 3 of the longline vest tops at £19a pop- again- layers then and gets good wear out of them.
I woulspd rather she has fewer clothes but gets mileage out of them.

I used to manage a Dash store in the 80s- Rubberman sweatshirt anyone?

toddlerama.

In response to the bag(!) comment I would say that for a lot of teenage girls they love using the bags as handbags/schoolbags or even for storing things in their bedrooms.

That's kind of why they want the actual hoddie itself. At least that's my experience of teenage girls.

jonicomelately · 07/02/2011 13:19

'hoodie' not 'hoddie.'

How true..my dd has a huge collection of carrier bags hanging off her wardrobe doors...and an evergrowing row of empty fragrance aerosol cans! Bizarre. oh and decorative boxes is another one.

I sold a load of my old JW stuff on ebay a little while back (from my skinner, yachting days) and made my money back on each item...some even going for more than I bought them for however many years ago. Make sure she holds onto it all!

NinkyNonker · 07/02/2011 16:13

Doh, skinnier.

Those hoodies are very sturdy. My DDs have gone off it a bit now, particularly since Jordan was spotted wearing some, and now prefer Hollister and A&F. Which unfortunately isn't that much cheaper. But then again, it's their money ...

SecondMrsS · 07/02/2011 16:15

I actually think that it's better than spending the money on a load of old tatt. My dsd used to spend her birthday money on 100 things from primark that used to wear out in a week... was chuffed when she got her Jack Wills bodywarmer... and I know she's warm!

Trollins · 16/09/2012 09:35

My daughter is like that but she has loads of jack wills she bought most of them her self and when she has 1 jumper on the other is in the wash she lives in them! They were a fantastic price for the amount of times she has worn them if she had bought cheaper ones they would of faded by now by the amount of time they have been in the wash! Fantastic buy though tbh.

VonHerrBurton · 17/09/2012 14:34

Mine was pink and grey too Darrell. I teamed it with Reebok hi-top trainers with the little union jack on the side.

S'pose that was 1988's version of Jack Wills! We all wanted them, not everyone got them!
