Newborn with conjunctivitis

Has anyone experienced this? My toddler has conjunctivitis and has now passed it onto my 4 day old . Have tried so hard to not let this happen and now she's woken up with very sticky eyes, and redness inside. Have phoned GP and have an appointment, but it's for later this afternoon and I'm going crazy with worry! Is the likelihood that she'll be ok, or could this really quickly damage her eyes? Thanks.

Mine had that too. Just needs eye drops. Don't think it does any damage in a hurry.

I thought it was pretty normal at that age, tbh!
Didn't clear it out of DS3 until he was at least 3 weeks old. He's nearly 3yo now and can't see that any harm was done.
Phone your MW, too, they know a lot.

Oh thank you for the reply, that's reassuring. I've phoned up as soon as I've seen it develop so hopefully it will be ok.

I checked the NHS website and it scared the life out of me. Says to contact GP immediately and that any newborn babies with infective conjunctivitis must be referred to an eye specialist (ophthalmologist) straight away so that their condition can be treated.

I do think in newborns you do have to take it seriously but you have a doctor's appointment so am guessing it will be fine. Are you breastfeeding? If so a little breastmilk in the eyes can help to ease it (obviously with advice from your doctor).

Thanks monkeytoo, yes bf, and I used to do that with ds when he was older. Thanks for reminding me! Babybrain here

Thanks everyone. Dr prescribed eyedrops and told me to continue bathing with salt water and cotton wool. She's looking SO much better already Smile
