wow I'm really in the minority here. So no one would leave their child fast asleep in a hotel room when they were downstairs at a wedding reception? Even if they checked on the child regularly?

Wasn't the original point of that thread that the room had unrestricted access to all and sundry though?

compo · 11/10/2005 10:34

I think so yes, but the responses suggest that no one would ever leave their baby at all in this way

noI wouldn't. I'd hate to think that my child could wake just after I left and be alone until I checked back.

I wouldn't either. Never have.

LucyJones · 11/10/2005 10:37

Would people trust a baby sitting service in a hotel though? The person meant to listening in could be serving a complicated customer for example...

No I wouldn't and wouldn't use a listening/beby sitting service either. When dd was a baby she'd just come along and sleep in pushchair.

I had an unpleasant experience of this type of thing when I was a child and it's stuck with me

LucyJones · 11/10/2005 10:42

Beetroot - would you lock the baby in then? What if there was a fire?

doctorfox · 11/10/2005 10:43

wasn't someone arrested for leaving their baby in a hotel room in America? Can't remember the whole story and not sure if they left the premises.

Friendlygirl · 11/10/2005 10:46

I have left my baby sleeping in my locked car while I dashed into the supermarket to buy a couple of things. Would any of you do that? Is it even l;egal? It worried me but I would rather do that than wake them up and sometimes I just have to get sometyhing from the shop for tea.

Yes I would do that too Beetroot. My parents did it when we were growing up.

daisy1999 · 11/10/2005 10:51

It's not worth the argument. Some people are always going to leave their children unattended. I've seen a baby in a car outside a supermarket, I waited nearby in my car until I knew the mother had returned and it was safe. I think I should have reported it and in future I would call the police and let them deal with it.

projectmanagerCOd · 11/10/2005 10:51

weve had htese threads before andthey alwasy end up the same way
basically it depend on the situation and the parents, BUT oyu always have to imagine how it woudl appear to a newpaper editor!

Monstersmum · 11/10/2005 10:51

Friendlygirl - there was a case in Australia where a Mum did just that and her car was stolen. Thieves panicked when they realised there was a baby in teh car and they abandoned the car - it was very hot - baby died.

There was also a case in the UK a few years ago where a Dad left his kids in his car while dropping something at a friends house - he was in sight the whole time. Electrial fault and car went on fire - couldn't get kids out.

Flukes maybe but not worth it in my view. You would never forgive yourself.

I wouldn't leave a child in a car in a petrol station either.

daisy1999 that was probably friendlygirls baby

compo · 11/10/2005 10:52

that's true Cod! It's really interesting hearing people's different views on it. Like Frenchygirl who is now probably worrying that if she leaves her child in the carpark again she might get back to find the police there

can't find the news story but here's the link to the gothamist report on it - from what I remember, they were having lunch downstairs in the hotel, but my memory may be wrong!

watch your baby!
