quick question for folk with thyroid meds

I recently had my medication upped from 50mg to 100mg for my underactive thyroid.

At first I felt horrid, dizzy, palpatations, shakey but I felt like this for a day when I first took the 50mg so wasn't worried.

7-9 days later my heart rate feels fast and I can't sleep at all. I go to bed exhausted and my heart is beating as if ive been running but ive been sat on the sofa for a few hours before bed!

Never had this before.

Is this the meds settling in or is it sounding like im taking too much.

PS - the doc did try to give me 25mg to start with but I begged him to double it so im reluctant to rush back - he will never listen to me again!

What is your resting pulse rate?

Carrotsandcelery · 29/01/2011 20:12

It does sound a little suspect. Overdosing on Levothyroxine is dangerous to the heart so I would be cautious. It sounds worth revisiting your gp to me I am afraid.

Hi,
How do you feel now?
I would give your Dr a call...maybe you need to try 50 one day and 25 the next?
Takes about 4-6 weeks to settle but what your going through at the minute sounds particulary unpleasant! Sad
Good Luck x

I feel a bit better last few days. No racing heart and I actually slept last night for first time.

I will wait a few days to make sure it wasn't because exhaustion got the better of me.

Thanks.

sneak when are you next going to have your bloods tested? Might be worth getting them done a bit sooner just to make sure?

sneakapeak · 01/02/2011 09:47

Another 4 weeks I think. I slept well again last night and I seem to have settled down. Feeling much more awake too so am reluctant to go back and tell them what happened.

Just spent a year feeling so tired and I feel like ive let my kids down and not enjoyed my DD's first year of life, as i should have, with crippling exhaustion Sad.

If i did feel weird again though I would definitely go back.

Im thinking I need 100mg but it should have gone up in 25mg stage instead of me rushing things.

I am on 100mg and I have never had symptoms like you describe.

Those kind of feelings are listed as unwanted side effects and you're advised to contact your doctor if you get them as it would indicate your dosage is too high.

Bumperrlicious · 01/02/2011 12:00

What about alternating so you have 75 one day and 100 the next. That's what my mum does.

Foreverondiet · 01/02/2011 23:23

sneakapeak do not adjust dose without discussing with GP but if you are having symptoms like that you need to go back to GP immediately to discuss.

It does take time to settle, but you shouldn't get palpatations - often people go up in 25mcg doses....mine only increased drastically in pregnancy....

I would say if it hasn't settled down in next couple of days go back to GP.

bessie26 · 02/02/2011 23:03

Ditto what forever says. If you think your dosage needs altering then go back to GP & get bloods re-tested first.

My GP insisted on starting me on 25mcg because she said it was worse to be over-medicated than under, but i guess how much it should be increased depends what your levels were to begin with?
