3 Year Old in Transit Van?

DH and I need to hire a transit van to collect something about a 3 hour drive away.

We have 2 options - 1) leave DS with my mum for the day which both of them would enjoy or 2) take him with us and have him travel in the transit van, in his car seat obviously. He is a big 3 year old so in a booster-type car seat with high back etc rather than the 5 point harness.

I am not sure that I am happy with taking him with us as I'm not really sure how safe he will be in a van rather than a car.

Just wondering if anyone has taken a small child in a van and/or has a view.

Thanks

Thanks - but sorry should have said if we take him, we'd go for the whole weekend.

We have a transit based camper van and go everywhere in it with our DS! Three seats across the front so his stage 2 car seat goes in the middle. I feel far safer travelling in that with him than when I have to go in a car.

I've done it (because I had to) when ds was 3 - and again more recently. He was fine. More than fine, he absolutely loved going in the van, it was a real adventure for him.

in that case, I would take him.:)

My kids have been in vans, in car seats with no issues.

I always think that a big van is like a bus, likely to fair better in any accident, not sure if its true though.

DH says if you drive a BIG van everyone gets out your way! He used to hate it when i had a tiny micra and if he borowed it people would cut him up/not give way when they should/pedestrians jump out to cross the road

I'm sure it will be perfectly safe. And agree that it will be hugely exciting for your DS. My DC were so exctied when we hired a van for a weekend once.

My dgs who is now 4 regularly travels in the middle front seat of van in his car seat-not usually for very long distances though.Re airbags you are supposed to turn them off if dc in carseat in front anyway.I'd take him.
