Portuguese Mums in South London

Hello mummies

I am a Portuguese living in London for 8 years. I have a 4 month old baby girl and am looking to set up a Portuguese speaking baby/ toddler?s mothers group. I live in south London close to an area with a large Portuguese population but there seems to be nothing in place.

I have been a bit frustrated looking for a group that caters for bilingual mothers and babies particularly Portuguese speaking.

I really want my daughter to be fluent in Portuguese and be able to communicate with my side of the family who don?t really speak English. I have been finding it really hard to just speak in Portuguese at home and plus when my partner is at home we always end up speaking in English. I know she is very small but they start getting familiar with the sounds of their language at this stage Smile

I just think we could meet up read stories and sing-along in Portuguese, allow the children to socialise in their own language, and also give mums a chance to meet new people and share experiences.

Lets make this group a reality if u are a Portuguese speaking mum, either from Portugal or any of the Portuguese speaking countries (Palop) or if your partner is Portuguese/Brasilian etc.. and you want your child to be bilingual get in touch.

Obrigado / Thanks

Munzy

Just wanted to offer a bit of encouragement and support - I think it's mad that, in an area with (I am told) the largest Portuguese population outside Portugal, this does not exist already.

I have been heavily involved in an equivalent Saturday French-speaking playgroup in Crystal Palace (we are just trying to restart it after it floundered for a while) and would be happy to tell you about the experiences of this group and also put you in touch with others (e.g. for French, there is a weekday playgroup in the area too and also a Saturday school).

Anyway, good luck!
