Suddenly leaking with Bumgenius

We've been using Bumgenius with DD for about the last year, and she's now 21 months.

They've been really reliable, but suddenly we're having really bad leaks round the legs, sometimes after as little as an hour.

I've done a strip wash (or, rather, a few) and that doesn't seem to be the problem. I've also been pretty careful about caring for them.

So, any ideas what's causing it and if it's fixable? Looking at the inserts, they are not always soaked through when they start to leak, often only in the middle. They also seem to bunching up between her legs. I wonder if it's, as she's walking in a more adult way, she's bunching up the insert and causing it to move away from the edges and leak?

She's potentially so close to potty training that I really don't want to buy new nappies, but the thought of moving to disposables is so depressing.

Any ideas?

It sounds like she is holding on to wee so when she does go it's a big puddle of wee which is too much for the microfibre to cope with. I have found little lamb bamboo boosters (size 2) to be a good fit with BG. I think it was about that age that I started using them for DD1. I would use the large BG microfibre insert plus the bamboo one underneath.

Do you reckon the inserts from an itti bitti might be worth a try? We had them in medium before the BG, so I have them in the drawer. Might not be the best fit, but would they give me an idea do you reckon?

no harm in trying. I've not had an itti before so I'm not familiar with their shape.
The LL ones do fit well and don't add too much bulk as they are quite slim but absorbant.
I definitely think it is worth experimenting with boosters before you give up.
I've been using Cloth Nappy Tree to buy some second hand stuff, if you ignore the tickers and hun stuff there is a lot of good nappies available and accessories such as boosters so you wouldn't have to spend a lot to experiment a bit. There is also a wanted section which is quite helpful.

I often use the folded Itti inserts in BGs together with the large microfibre BG insert. They work pretty well together if a little (but not too) bulky on a toddler.

Secondtimelucky · 18/01/2011 21:28

Oooh, thanks both. That definitely sounds worth a try. If the itti bamboo insert helps, I might invest in something that's a better fit.

Smac, on the Little Lamb, you said boosters, is that the ones they describe on their website as nighttime bamboo boosters (not the bamboo nappy inserts)? here. If so, 10 for £12 sounds ok. £25 to save the nappy stash would be money well spent if I can't pick them up elsewhere.

yes the night time bamboo boosters but when I looked at the LL site they only have size 1 in stock. I have size 2 and they are great. I bought some second hand size 1s thinking they were a bargain but sold them on again as they really were too small. I'd hold out for the size 2s and check some other sites.

Just to say that I am after little lamb bamboo boosters size 2 as well... I contacted LL a few days ago and they said they'll have them in stock again at the end of the month Smile

TuttoRhino · 20/01/2011 20:46

Check on ebay for LL boosters. They usually sell 10 for £12 posted.

HairyCanary · 20/01/2011 21:11

I've seen them here if you put in mumsnet as the coupon code you get free postage I think.

HairyCanary · 20/01/2011 21:21

looks like ebay just have the size 1s in stock too

Just wanted to check in and report that the first three days trying out a bamboo layer in the ittis has been a massive success. No leaks at all up to three hours - whereas before we were getting leaks in under an hour. I'm using the medium itti inserts I had (the trifold ones) and, because they're quite narrow, they don't bunch up between DD's legs.

Result! Thanks guys. The trial continues...

I'm glad the bamboo layer is making a difference secondtime Smile

One week in, still no leaks!

Well, except for the day that DD managed to wiggle one bum cheek out of the nappy and then poo. That was messy! I don't think I can blame the bumgenius for that though. Combination of 'user error' and a contortionist toddler.

Grin at secondtime and your contortionist toddler and user error!
