Cat urinating on my DS

This is an odd one I know but I'm becoming increasingly concerned that our cat may be weeing on my 3 week old baby.

On two occasions now I have found his grobag to be wet on the outside and babys head very wet. The cat has clearly got into the room. I always close the door properly but today I saw our cat jump and open the door (like you see on you've been framed) and last week I found the cat actually in the Moses basket.

Has anyone else's baby been wee' d on? What can I do? My DH suggested putting a nappy on the cat too.

Your cat is clearly very displeased at the new arrival or is marking your dc as his terrority????

No idea what you do about it though, cuddle cat and baby at the same time to introduce them?

I would find a way of keeping the cat out of the bedroom somehow

Ewww, sounds like it. I've always had cats but they've never been too close to the cot and tbh would have been kicked into touch if they had...
Does your cat seemed distressed in anyway? unhappy?
you could rehome?...
or how about trying a cat cover for your moses basket?
or putting the moses basket in a cot if you have one, then covering with cat cover?
You need to find a way to stop cat getting into the room though. Asap.

Does it smell like cat wee? (IME cat wee normally stinks)

In anycase I agree you have to find a way of keeping the cat out of the bedroom.

Cat (called tinkles I'm afraid) seems fine. Maybe a little curious as to what all the fuss is about.

My DH says he's going to knock something together today out of some Maple he's been trying to put to use for ages and chicken wire but in the meantime I'm going to put an open umbrella in the Moses basket with baby.

This is just awful, I know it's bad luck to put umbrellas up in the house and you can probably tell I'm married to an odd ball but before anyone suggests it I don't think he's weeing on baby. I've just thought, won't the cat still be able to wee through the wire?

The water was off in our house for 4 hours the other week and that was just the worst thing imaginable, a truely horrible experience and now this!

Nightmare.

Are you sure it is definitely wee though?
Or could the wet be sommething else, baby vomit perhaps and then cat is licking up the milky vomit?

Either way still not nice and yes you need to keep the cat out of the baby's bed. Just thinking that if cat is weeing on baby then indicates cat is insecure/has issues with baby entering the house but if not wee it may just be curious.

Get a cat net. They cost about £5.
Keep the cat out of the room.
Is your cat not neutered? This sounds more like tom cat behaviour. Get him done if not already.

Agree with those who have said cat wee STINKS - if it doesn't pong, it's not cat wee IMO.

But I would keep the cat out of the room - if the clever little bugger can open the door, then I think you have to shut him out of the house/into the kitchen if you have a cat flap in the back door when the baby's asleep (and I say that as a cat lover).

Also you can buy one of those plug-in pheremone things from the pet shop of vets to keep the cat happy. Big disruption for the cat, who will be very territorial.

(Btw, when I saw the title of the thread, I was thinking 'I really hope this is about a cat taking revenge on the Nintendo, not a baby!')

That's what I was thinking edam, if this is a territorial thing and the cat is weeing then it would be worth asking the vet about pheromone products (we had a pheromone spray when we moved house).

If however the cat is just being 'over friendly' and it is not weeing on the baby then all that stuff is not going to help.

I would be a bit concerned about the umbrellas or the cover thing falling on the baby TBH - especially if the cat got in and knocked them!

Yes i'm certain it's cats wee. It really does stink.
A bit like sugar puffs actually.

So tinkles is nowhere to be seen and my
DH is currently banging away in the garage with wood.

Agreed it is gross but psychologically it's positive, in that at least the cat appears to be claiming ds as his, rather than resenting or rejecting him.

Assume the cat is neutered, btw?

Yuck.
Get rid of the cat.
Mine had to go when it starting weeing and pooing on ds's toy/bedding etc, let alone actual baby.

But my cat was VILE, bitey and scratchy, and not family friendly. Don't miss her at all. Cats protection were great.

I think you're right. It would be a shame as until now tinkles has been fine and you have to understand that I had no idea she could open doors until last week. Dh swears he saw her open a terrys chocolate orange at Christmas so maybe I just don't know her?

Anyway, DH is has had enough. He's just come out of the garage with the Sunday papers and what looks like a wooden toilet seat with dangly string and is suggesting he wee's on the cat to see how she likes it.

He thinks it might work and we should at least
try. I don't know.

I think he should try, Tinkles would have to accept him as the dominant male and will perhaps stop pissing on your son as a result.

the cat is marking the baby as his/hers.

my cat never weed on the baby but he did wee in teh moses basket about 3 times in the first few weeks of ds arriving. he also still tries to sleep in his cot.

just get a latch for teh door that the cat cant open.

You've only had the baby for 3 weeks, getting rid is a knee jerk reaction! It can take time for cats and dogs to accept a new fammily member.

Please be aware that most rehoming places put their charges to sleep after a few weeks perhaps just get your cat put to sleep and save them the bother?

cargirl what do you mean about the rehoming places killing the cats? Surely not the healthy ones? Do you know something the rest of us don't?!
I was assured that my rehomed one had had various jabs etc that I had neglected to give her, and that she was happy in her foster home awaiting a permanent home somewhere without kids. They had a good measure of her character also.
Have you expereienced something different? Have you volunteered at one of these places? Let the (dead) cat out of the bag!

Ask Valhalla, she's much more into dogs tho than cats she can tell you the names of the rescue places that do and don't destroy.

Yes some places only give the cats/dogs x weeks to find new homes and after that they are destroyed.

Be careful what you clean with. You're best getting the special fluid from the vet that smells like almonds. Normal cleaner just encourages the cat to wee more because it has ammonia in it which makes the cat think some great lion has been in and marked it's territory.

I've never known a cat to do this but it's not impossible. usually they just want to sleep in a warm cot so a net is definitely a good idea.
