I feel so guilty! My 3 week old has caught a cold from her older siblings

I feel so guilty, my 3 week old DS3 has caught a cold from her older siblings (aged 8 to 4). I was really hoping I would get cold first and be able to protect her via bfing. She woke up this morning with green snot streaming out of her tiny nostril. She seems okay otherwise (no temperature) but our four year old was quite umwell for at least 7 days with this (and I am already exhausted from looking after her every night).

Looking for any reassurance/advice please?

Don't feel guilty, its not your fault. Unfortunately at this time of the year with so many bugs doing the rounds it was probably inevitable that your dd would become ill at some point.

I can appreciate that your dd is only 3 weeks old and you are tired and its christmas but please don't beat yourself up, look after yourself, is there anyone that can give you a hand so you can get some rest.

thank you, just had a nap and feeling much more sane

Better that than chickenpox (I've known it to happen, baby was fine with it).

aw don't fret. dd2 and i had horrible flu at only 2 wks, unfortunately she continues to catch evferything going despite bf.
saline drops i find essential for clearing even runny snot and softening crusty nose! a couple of drops in each nostril before bf and she'll automatically swallow all the gunk and breathe more clearly. i used a couple of drops of karvol on my clothing too to help clear nose a little.
i co-slept during the flu bout with dh on sofa so he could look after others and leave us to it. also meant i could keep my eye on dd at all time rather than jumping up to check if she was breathing constantly.
let her sleep slightly upright on your chest if it helps too

I know how you feel. My ds is now 4 weeks but caught a cold last week from his older sisters. He had a horrible cough with it, which has still not gone but is better. He kept throwing up after fits of coughing. He is on the mend now thankfully. Don't worry it will get better after a few days but if you are worried get her seen by the doctor. I put a folded towel under his moses basket mattress and he has a goi goi pillow anyway so he is slightly raised at head end.

My lo had her first cold at 9 days old and I felt so guilty, it was terrible :(

I found saline drops a godsend at clearing her little nose and propping her moses basket slightly helped too or popping a rolled up towel underneath the head-end just to lift it slightly.

I hope she gets better soon xx

Winter babies Grin, Ds's (7)first "gift" to Dd was his stinking cold; she went straight from newborn snuffle to germy snot.

Hope she feels better soon

I passed on whooping cough from me to newborn DS; that was a major guilt trip.
