Today DH found DS watching soft porn on the internet (new laptop, hadn't put the content control software on...).
DS (8, lovely) said that our neighbour (10, also very nice) had said that if you want to find out about sex you go to Youtube and type "sex" in - so that's what he'd done. He also said that three of his playground friends (the alpha males that he hangs out with need I say) talk about sex and it had seemed so strange so he had asked the neighbour to tell him more.

I had already discussed puberty and making babies with Ds to the level of "when he's older he will be able to make his willy stiff until he can get the seeds out of it which then if they go into a woman's womb can combine with an egg to make a baby". It had felt that we were learning more very naturally over the course of the last few years. He'd been interested about how to get the seeds out of his willy ("would it hurt? answer, no, it feels so nice some boys practice it every day!") but He hadn't asked about getting the seeds into the woman, and I hadn't actually used the word Sex.

Anyway, I've said to him that youtube is not the place to learn about sex and that I will find a better website for him. I've also asked him to promise that if he remembers just one thing, it's that real life isn't like the video he saw today.

Any recommendations please? I went to the Channel 4 "sex education versus pornography" site but I did struggle with the idea of putting my 8 year old on it. However, if the alternative is for him to learn from porn (and he will find another computer with full access if he's curious) I'd rather than he had comprehensive accurate information than information he'd got from porn

Please help! he is so lovely.

I don't know of any websites, but there are plenty of books aimed at his age-group - we had "Lets Talk About Sex" which we got from Amazon, and is aimed pre-puberty. It covers the basics in a no-nonsense kind of way.

I think the tricky thing with a website would be to find one aimed at the right age/stage, as sex education goes from tiny children knowing that babies grow in mummy's tummy, up to teenagers wanting advice about STDs!

"What's happening to me" (for boys) is another good book which you could reda with him and keep for reference throughout puberty.
It discusses erections and masturbation etc and sex, but all in a very matter of fact way with lots of pictures.

thank you, I will get hold of those as this issue isn't going to go away
