6 week old crying almost constantly during naps

My 6 week old falls asleep when breastfeeding or during a cuddle before hes due a nap, then wakes when I put him in his cot. I leave and he starts to cry, then stops and I think hes settling, then he starts again, stops again, starts again...... just as I start to go into him he stops crying so I say I'll wait and let him keep trying to settle himself, then he'll start again.

He sleeps for long stretches in the buggy or carseat during the day.

At night he usually settles after a quick cry then sleeps for a 3-5 hours.

Can anyone give me any ideas on whats wrong during the day. Hes my 4th child so I just don't have time to keep going in to him and I feel sad to hear him crying so much and worry hes not getting enough sleep :(

Or is this just his method of settling himself and I should leave him?

Thanks

He's only little so probably stil wants to be near you. In the car or pram there will be rocking and noise to soothe him. Can you try putting on some background noise eg low radio or white noisecand swaddling?

Or you could get a sling and use that for naps? That's what I did for DS at that age and used the cot once he was older.

Have you tried swaddling him? This has worked wonders with our DD.

He probably notices being put down as he no longer feels your body heat, cuddles and smell. Swaddling can make him feel like he's still being cuddled and I also found that DD didn't keep waking herself up by arm and leg jerks which newborns have.
