Are we over-feeding our son?

DS is 8 months now, a big, strapping, active boy. He's been crawling since 6 months, supported his own weight on his legs at 2 months and is easily pulling himself up on furniture etc. We weaned him at about 5 months (he was EBF until about 2 months, then mix fed with a bottle at bedtime) and now he eats really well. Possibly too well? He seems to eat (and poo!) a LOT.

He has a 7oz bottle at bedtime (about 7.30pm), an 8oz bottle at about 11pm and then another bottle of about 6oz at about 5.30am. I thought that he might just be using the bottle as a sleep cue and we've been gradually reducing his early morning bottle but most of the time he really does seem to wake up hungry.

Last time he was weighed (about a month ago) he was 20 pounds or so and on the 91st centile. The HV didn't comment on his weight, just mentioned 'he was doing really well'. Perhaps he's just a big, hungry baby? Apart from waking up for feeds, he sleeps well and a very happy, jolly baby during the day. It's just that all the literature says that by about 6 months, babies' stomachs are big enough to hold food enough to last through the night...

don't panic!
he seems just like my ds! :) he was an epic milk guzzler and didn't manage 12h without a bottle at night till he was almost 9mo.
he could be thirsty in the morning rather than hungry so make sure he's drinking lots in the day - water is fine.

if you are worrried get hv to measure his length. he should be ROUGHLY similar percentile (if he's avbig weight then he should be tall ish iyswim)

the weight will drop off once he's crawling tho! then you'll miss his sausage legs - that's what i miss from ds's pre walking days!

My DD has been at the top of the chart since she was about 4 months. Still is now at 15 months. She's 29lbs, but is off the top of the chart for height! So is perfectly in proportion.

Some babies are at the bottom of the chart, some in the middle, some at the top. Your boy and my girl are just at the top!

Thanks for your replies! I will get the HV to measure his length as well. He has water during the day but will make sure he's had plenty by bedtime.

My DS2 was a huge, chubby baby and toddler who ate and ate and ate! He's 6 now and very very skinny. The weight drops off them once they get active and they acquire lots of fussy habits!

Sounds like a strapping lad to be to me.
Watch your back!

WowOoo · 17/11/2010 14:18

Forgot to say no, I don't think you are.

When my children are ravenous I feed them as much as possible.
Ds2 was recently poorly. Lost some weight. If he was a bit chunkier I'd be much happier.

WowOoo, my back's buggered already Smile

I think it's genetic too - his Dad is 6'4" and well built and his uncles on my side of the family are wiry but known but their enormous appetites!

Gah - known for their enormous appetites.
