Already got a boy and nappy changing was no problem as everything on the outside. Baby girl born this morning and has had an amazing amount of muconium since. Please tell me how/how much to clean her bits.

I had a girl first. When DS was born I was amazed how much easier it was to clean his "bits" Grin

Golden rule with girls (as I'm sure you know) is to wipe front to back (up to down!). So one bit of cotton wool and warm water, wipe, discard. Meconium is so hard to clean. You'll use loads! Don't worry, it gets easier, you won't need shares in cotton wool long term.

Don't worry about getting "in" to the folds. Just clean what you can see Grin

Argh, forgot the most important thing. Congratulations!!! Smile

congratiolations!
I had a boy first as well and then a girl. oh what a difference.
I use cotton pads with warm water and baby lotion, this gently cleans of the icky stuff and moisturises the skin as well. always wipe from front to bottom and also a little bit but very gently between the labia. you don*t need to clean inside, as the vagina itself is selfcleaning, just gently on the outside.

were you in disbelief as well when they told you its a girl?
dd
s bits were so swollen I was sure they were boybits!

See, I had a girl first and found a boy much more puzzling. How the hell do you get meconium off a scrotum?

In fact I asked dh, who claimed not to know. I pointed out that he should know, being the only other scrotum owner in the family, and he said that he never pooed on his so why would he know how to clean poo off one?

For girls - very soggy cotton wool squeezed out as you go front to back then discard.

Don't clean too thoroughly. Treat the inner folds of her bits as you would a boy's foreskin (ie. you shouldnt ro9ll back/clean under his foreskin, neither should you go mad cleaning ever tiny inner bit of your girl's vulva). Wipe front to back and avoid perfumed wipes etc - ime, girls react worse to these than boys do.

GingerGlitterGoddess · 11/11/2010 14:14

Olive oil is v good for shifting stubborn meconium, it somehow unsticks it from the skin without rubbing. Congratulations on your DD!

Thanks so much everyone, great help as we were very nervous, she seemed so tiny after DS with such mucky bits. They are nice clean bits now! Yuno you made me laugh out loud!

Did it with my eyes shut on the whole. Nice warm bath every day sorted it out.

winnybella · 12/11/2010 21:33

I only ever really clean DD's inner labia when
she does runny poo and I don't notice for a bit and it goes everywhere iyswim. Other than that a bath in the evening.

PipIsOutNow · 12/11/2010 22:00

yuno i am creased by your post!! crying laughing!!

reallytired · 12/11/2010 23:02

If my daughter does a really explosive poo then I bath her. I think the advice you had already is excellent.

Anyway congratulations.

onceamai · 12/11/2010 23:57

Just re-read post. OMG brand new baby. Well done. Congratulations. Hope you are both OK. Hope you get a good night's sleep. Had Ds first then DD. DD's are fab - they get even better as they get bigger.

Am so impressed - new baby - and you can post/type/ask questions. SUPERMUM Smile

Congratulations.

Vaseline on the clean bottom means the next meconium poo comes off so much more easily. I so wish I'd known that for my first born - and so glad I did for my second.

Octaviapink · 14/11/2010 06:18

Congratulations! Warm water with olive oil is very good for wiping, and front to back as everyone says. I would avoid baby lotions on a newborn as they often contain massive amounts of perfume and can cause nasty reactions.

Am due with DS today so will remember the Vaseline tip and also be interested to see what DH says about getting poo off a scrotum!
