If so is enough just to send a saved document saying 'this is a test' or do I have to copy out a good chunk of text?

Yes. I always say "test". It is worth doing with each course just to be sure your tutor can actually access your document (I use a mac so all the more important for me.)

i tend to just put my name, PI number and say hi - hoping a nice friendly aproach will sway marks in my favour
