Anyone got an opinion on her sculpture that they'd like to share?

Hi Lyra - there is a discussion here
But don't know if any MN-ers have actually seen it actually in TRafalgar Sq yet.

Actually, I have just realised that I am particularly pleased that this has gone up opposite Nelson's column in the week that commemorative flotilla has taken place - increases the point about 'ordinary women' as the subjects of national statues in addition to war-mongering men!

Lots of opinions for you here , lyra

Not sure what I think - I like the idea of it. I have only seen small pics on the internet though so it's hard to judge, but from what I have seen I think the actual statue is too bright and shiny and clean-cut.

Morning Jan - so slow with that link tho'

I thnk it might be a bit bright and smooth, too. Marble is v porous so i thought it might weather down quite nicely - but it won't be there for all that long, will it?

Where will it go when they replace it, i wonder? Someone's front garden in suburban redbridge perhaps?

I was interrupted mid-post, Blu

Can't imagine what will happen to it when they take it down; is it modern enough for eg Tate Modern? (It's quite traditional really, isn't it - apart from being machine-made?) I love the suburban garden idea

It's based in London, so I would guess that the vast majority of the country will never see it or feel that strongly about it. Far more important things going on in our local communities. How much is it costing? Could the money have gone to a charity or organisation working with people with disabilities? Or has the sculptor donated all his fees etc?

I think it's fab! saw an exhibition in Walsall gallery of pics when she was pregnant and with her baby too - amazing.
