19 m/o wont stay in bed!

Had to take side off of DS's cot as he could climb out. We had not long got bedtime going great with him settling himself within 5 mins of going to bed and sleeping through - now its a total disaster. He's mucking about until 10pm at night, waking later on and getting into bed with us and generally being a total pain in the arse. I can just about cope with the waking up at night, its the two hours of cocking about at bedtime that's leaving me frazzled. We do a nice long bath/story time routine, he just wont stay in bed to get settled, and stands by the gate crying and grumbling until one of us comes back..over and over and over...any tips on getting him to stay put gratefully appreciated!

My 22mo is in a bed, and I also have to get him asleep before I leave the room or he is straight up again, shouting at the stairgate on the landing etc.

I sometimes just hold him til he nods off, or occasionally he will go to sleep if I keep my hand on his back for a while.

It is a right pain though, I would try the proper rapid return thing but he shares his bedroom with DD who gets cross at him keeping her up. I rarely manage to settle him before 9 despite tucking him in around 8 after bath/stories etc.

I think they just get old enough to fight sleep! I am thinking about only letting him nap for one hour as sometimes he has a big nap and I think thats making it worse.
