8wk old with streaming cold...anything I can do?

My nearly 8 wk old DD has caught her dad's cold and is horribly congested.

I can't get hold of the health visitor...has anyone any advice?

We've tried a steamy room, and am going to try to get a nasal aspirator to help her keep her nose clear, but she seems really miserable! She woke up at 1am cause of it and won't lie on her back even with her head raised cause it makes her snuffle/cough. I propped myself up and let her sleep on my chest last night, is that dandgerous?

Any words of wisdom gratefully appreciated!

Propping the head of her cot up? How old do they have to be to take calpol, I can't remember? It's great for things like that.

Olbus (sp?) oil is good for colds but you really only want a couple of drops on the bedding, it's strong stuff. Dab of vicks on her chest? Can't remember the age limit on that either, sorry.

You'll probably find it won't last very long. She might even be fine by tonight!

Good luck. X

Mine had something similar at 4 weeks. I remember the pharmacy saying all she could have was saline nasal drops - but I don't know how you're meant to get them up their nose. Hope it passes quickly for her. xx

Try a few drops of Olbas oil on a tissue left in her room away from the cot. Re Calpol, I think you can use the infant one from 2 months? Hope she gets better soon.

We used saline drops - they come with a pipette type thing so you can lean their head back and then squirt a drop up their nose. Needless to say, they hate it, and will probably cry, but it does the trick with very bad congestion. If it's streaming then saline drops won't help. I found Olbas oil and propping the cot helped a bit too. Letting her sleep on your chest is probably ok if you're used to it, but be careful you're not too out of it with tiredness. It might be better to keep her in her cot/moses basket, propped up and next to you so you can check on her. Hope she feels better soon! I remember being really worried when my DS had a bad cold, but you soon get used to it...

Calpol make saline drops in a little puffer thing, just one spray up each nostril. Initially makes them cry a bit but definitely works!

Hope your DD feels better soon.
