honestly i think this is a bit of an overreaction. I can understand why the retailers have pulled the products. They cant do any less once the "alarm" has been raised but i do wish a bit of common sense could be applied sometimes.

Sleep positioners are meant to keep babies on their backs. The babies that suffocated were placed on their side in the sleep positioners and then rolled onto their fronts and i think there in lies the problem.

Reminds me of the whohaa that happened with bumbos a few years ago. A baby fell out of one and was seriously injured and suddenly people were saying they were not safe. THe problem wasn't with the bumbo, it was with the fact that the bumbo had been placed on a kitchen bench and the unsupervised baby fell from that height.

But can't a baby wriggle onto it's side in the positioner and then onto it's stomach? It's possible.

it could do that without the positioner too.

if a baby can wriggle on to its side I would expect to have enough motor control to be able to turn their heads to the side if they wound up on their tummies.

i would hazard a guess that the poor babies who suffocated were placed onto their side by their carer and didnt have the motor control to turn their heads when they fell onto their tummies.

It could do it without the positioner but then they would not be held in by the positioner but free to wriggle about...their face would not be pressed into the side.
