Hi all,

Posting here as not sure where else!

SIL had baby 4 weeks ago; SIL been in hospital ever since due to serious complications following her ecs. Baby home and very healthy. As yet there is no name and SIL wants to wait to get to know baby until she chooses a name with her DH.

Does anyone know registering the baby can be extended due to special serious cicumstances???

Many thanks in advance! Will chuck this on baby names too.

Hi It would seem that you have 42 days (6 weeks) to register the baby in some areas but there is no one you can contact about delaying doing it. Try phoning your SILs regisry office and asking them they would be the ones in the know. Hope your SIL is ok.

Thanks for the reply; I just did what you suggested and it seems that there are no extensions allowed. Sad

I don't think I will tell her just yet, I wanted to give her positive news. Many thanks for your wishes.

I'm sure I read on here once that you can change a child's name up until they are a year without any charge.

You could maybe look into that, that way you could register the baby with an 'interim' name and it would take the pressure off and SIL can choose the name as she wishes.

Hope she is better soon, x.

Probably better to tell her so she can register with a temp name. A someone else has already said, you can change as many times as you want within the first year - i think for free.

Out of sheer nosiness what have you been calling the baby until now? (I mean have you been using a name, I don't expect you to tell us what it is!)

I believe a child can be registered as " baby surname" and then name changed for free while under 12 months.

NOT registering will have knock ons later in childhood/ life for the child.
