Play it, baby!

Your suggestions please: I'm looking for good music to play to my son, and hopefully put off the horrible day when he will only be happy with Barney the Dinosaur's Greatest Hits on constant rotation.

He's not yet a year old, but seems to like hearing music and singing - he listened quite carefully to the Unthanks (folky group) when they were on the radio a while ago. I try and sing to him as well - a mix of nursery rhymes, and songs from the shows adapted as necessary to take account of his age and that I can't remember all the words. I just need a bit more inspiration though at the moment!

I know that there's going to be a big difference in personal tastes, but I'd like to know if you found music that your children liked, that didn't cause parental ear bleeding and an urgent desire to put a foot through the speakers.

join the ELC birthday club - they sent DD a free CD on her birthday which is on pretty heavy rotation in our house, as well as a 20% off voucher. It's a pretty standard mix of kids songs - hickory dickory dock, polly put the kettle on etc.

Otherwise I tend to have the radio on throughout the day and she will often dance to that - at least for a little while until she starts demanding 'my music' again!

As a teacher I've carefully gone through my entire Itunes collection and checked it on lyrics.com for naughty words, inappropriate content, etc. I have it in a special playlist and play it in class. I now play it to my son too.
I suggest you play him your preferred music, then you won't hate it too much! :)

Look for the Putamayo Kids CDs - they have a fabulous range of world/regional and folk music, most of it with lyrics they can sing along to, and good beats. My two both love them, and we put one on most days for a good bop after lunch.

Also the 'Colours are Brighter' album is great. We have it in the car. A good mix of actual rock songs with lyrics kids will find amusing, plus some more obvious kids tunes.

Thanks for those suggestions Lionstar - I've just ordered them!

Always happy to share the love Smile

There's nothing worse than a cd of nursery rhymes on constant loop to drive you insane

Agreed - that was the one rule we set: No nursery rhyme CDs in the car!

Sorry to take so long to say thanks! I'm looking at your suggestions and hoping to find something that we both like! The boy did seem to like the Beegees, the other day, so adding that into the mix as well - just need to find something the husband likes as well, but that's probably impossible...
Thanks again!
