I almost broke the baby! He was standing holding on to coffee table and I knew he would fall as he almost always does but I thought it's ok it's only carpet and he will never learn not to fall if I hover over him, so I pottered around while he played and banged and eventually the inevidable happened and he fell. He screamed and screamed and just wouldnt calm down, I checked head and body but couldnt see any problems. I ended up putting him in bed as it was close to nap time and I assumed he was just tired and therefore a bit sensitive. When he woke from his nap his left arm was hanging limply and when I tried to put a sweater on he screamed again. Took him straight down to dr, who says it is most likely a strain and he may favour it for a while...I knew he would fall and I let him, poor ds, what a mean mum

you are not a mean mum, and the doctor did not think you had done anything wrong trust your instincts you did a good thing, you were right to let him try on his own with out hovering and you did check him all over when he fell it is difficult to know if they have hurt themselves or if it is just shock at falling on his own. Normal they do bounce back with a smile and are fine but bumps and sprains are part of learning to try things for the first time all you can do is encourage him to explore the world around him and for him to know that you are there for the times he forgets and takes the next tumble in his stride.
