Resource for baby development? A little lost!

Hi All!

Our DD1 is now a week old, and seems to be changing every day, and this has brought home to me that I am a complete novice at this. I want to make sure that we are entertaining her and helping her develop, at the moment we are doing a lot of cuddling, feeding and sleeping...interspersed by the odd bit of sitting in her bouncy chair looking our of the window! I worry that we're not 'doing' enough with/for her.

Can anyone recommend a good resource for baby development week by week or month by month or whathaveyou? Book or online is fine, I just don't want to get it wrong!

Thanks in advance!

Firstly, Relax and breathe.

Your daughter is a week old. You gave birth a week ago. Now is the time to stare at her, hold her and love her. Don't worry if you are 'doing it right' and certainly don't worry about 'entertaining' her - that's never your job.

There is a development calendar here on Mumsnet (look under babies) but the first entry starts at 6 weeks. FWIW I think a lot of children are overstimulated, we all need time to contemplate.

am sure you are doing a great job, just make sure that your baby is getting ALL the sleep she needs - that is her growing time! - and don't worry about toys or stimulation. The best toy for her is your face, it's what babies like to look at best. If you do use black and white books then don't leave them with her for too long, 15 or 20 min is plenty. Mirrors are great when she starts trying to move her head more.

There is a lovely book I read ages ago with lots of stills from videos to show how babies interact with the world around them. Can't remember what it's called...

Don't worry and go with your instincts !
