Buggies on Planes?

Hopefully someone can give me some advice - I am a single mum planning my first holiday with DD (2 years old). We will need to take a buggy........... does anyone have experience of taking them abroad?

Whatever do you do with them? Are they considered "hand luggage" i.e. you take them into the plane yourself. Or do they have to go in the cargo hold?

NB if it's not at the bottom of the plane steps when you get to your destination you may need to go to the oversized luggage carousel to retrieve it.
HTH and bon voyage
